Well, canons are $100 cheaper when comparing similar class.

??? I'm pretty sure the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XT are very similar and the Nikon is $100 cheaper. The D40x and Rebel XTi are similar as well and again the Nikon is about $100 cheaper depending on where you buy it.

Those are really the best 4 entry level cameras. As a beginner you're not going to be able to notice differences in abilities of the camera so get the one the feels best to you. Hold it, take pictures, carry it ect.

The D40(x) and XT(i) are all fantastic entry level DSLRs, there is no way the capabilities of those cameras will limit you at all.

Probabl more important to get a camera that at your skill level. You could buy a $5K camera and still take crap pictures if your bad at photography.
