Default Another happy owner of Canon 40D

I bought this new body for the extra crop factor (to use with my 600IS lens-wild life stuff). At first, i was not sure if i make the right choice or not. However, after a few shot at LA Zoo today, i'm happy with it. Strongly recommend for anyone that looking to buy/upgrade to the new 40D.

100% crop:

How do you like the 40d compared to the 5d in image quality, noise and color... nevermind the full frame.

Great! I'm still waiting on mine. I'm ordering mine from canon so it will take 3-4 weeks (but I got the body and 28-135 lense for 1220 OTD).

what's the point of using a cropped sensor.

your not getting any more reach.

600mm full frame vs. 960mm on the 40d is a HUGE difference.

From my understanding, a crop sensor isn't going to multiply your reach by the crop factor (in this case, 1.6). Crop bodies will simply change the field of view. Essentially, they will crop the frame (imagine that).

oh really.... i never knew looking through a smaller window was a substitute for magnification.

I beg to differ . 5D shines in landscape and portraits... I just wished mine had 6.5fps like the 40d

I was wondering that for a while. I've shot with both, only a couple times with the 5d, the difference between the 40d and the 5d is negligable. Reputable photo reviewers have been flamed for claiming that the 40d rivals the 5d.

When it comes down to it I can barely tell the difference and I look at photos all day long.

Technically the 5d does have a larger sensor, that was the flagship in the day... but the 40d has newer generation image processing, digic 3 which is same as the mark iii... for all that's worth.

well..i own/use 5D to 1ds mk II to Mark III and 40D so i know what each body specialize in. Wait until you OWN and USE all of those bodies list above then you see why i said like that.

i just come back from Zion/Bryce with 40D and canon 10-22 lens and love it better than the combo 5D + 14mm or Mark III + 14mm i used last year on the same location.

It's hit or miss, depending on what you compare.

40D has the DIGICIII processor and 14 bit RAW. The 5D is using DIGICII with a 12 bit RAW.

The 5D does get the edge at higher ISO above 800 but only slightly.

Dynamic range goes to the 5D.

Autofocus edge easily goes to the 40D

For those that don't need the full frame body, a 40D with a 10-22 lens set up is pretty damn good when compared to the 5D with a 16-35.
