op....how much post processing did you do with all those pictures? are most of the pictures straight out from the SD card? I have a D40 also but I'm guessing photos like the ones you posted are post-processed right?

lol no sir. not much. i shot in raw and the only things changed were exposure time. (in case i left the shutter too long). then resized and stamped. thats all. but most the shots were shot in bulb mode with shutter speeds at 3-5 minutes.

bulb mode.. lets see.
on my D40, the longest exposure time is 30" (seconds) however, in some lighting situations like the night beach shot i took, youre gonna need more than 30 seconds to catch anything. so, you set the aperture to what you want and go past 30 seconds then the shutter speed will be blank. now you are ready to shoot in bulb mode. i would recommend buying a remote so you can set it up on the tripod and u push the remote once to open the shutter and you time it, then click the remote again to close it. really simple. if you dont have a remote, i think you have to hold the shutter button however long you want to keep the shutter opened. try it out and post some pictures!

this shot was taken about midnight with a 2 minute shutter speed.. notice the street lights are on but looks like the sun was up. i did it for the lighting so people can see the fender gap. anyways. i shot it raw and played with temperature and exposure.

Eric, good to see you playing with your cam... great pics. I'll make you a new watermark soon, as in this week! I don't know why, but Adobe's found a way to make me buy Photoshop, as my "trial" copies are expired even if I reformat my computer. LOL.
BTW, bulb mode is really for situations that require imprecise timing... like capturing lightning or fireworks when you don't know just when they are going to occur. Or when you want an exposure past 30 sec, like 3 min+ exposures to do star trails.
The shutter stays open as long as you hold the shutter release down. You can choose aperture, but the exposure will be imprecise as underexposure/overexposure depends on luck. This is really thrown out the window when you do bright lights or light streaks such as fireworks or star trails as the bright source (fireworks) on dark sky will still look pretty good even if it's under or over exposed.
That's why when you see the star streak pictures, the shot needs to be done in a pitch dark area with little to no artificial ambient light, which if there were ambient light, the shot would be over exposed due to the super long shutter time (3min +).
An example:

Canon does sell wired shutter controls that lets you set the shutter time for bulb mode, so you don't have to physically hold the button down for the entirety.
Also, shutter speeds over 1min. or so would exceed the min. aperture of most lenses (f/22) in most situations... though there are workarounds... like experimenting with neutral density filters.
