Just got the fresh, new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for Canon mount and it is awesome. AF is spot on, and sharpness is great wide-open at f/1.4 when compared to other wide aperture lenses. Most importantly, it does not suffer halation (dreamy looking softness) wide-open in high-contrast situations like the Canon equivalent. I have the nifty fifty (Canon 50mm f/1.8), but it hunts in low-light, unlike this Sigma, which can focus in all but most difficult situations. It's a major trip when you can hand-hold, focus and capture, in low-light... bar type lighting.
Shot wide-open at f/1.4

Here's what it can do with cars... all but the last image shot wide-open at f/1.4 for that shallow depth of field.

f/5.6

f/1.4... handheld, with very little daylight.

The lip is Varis. Expensive POS!
That could have been another lens! What was I thinking?

The Sigma sounds like a nice addition.

Stopping down, of course, performance should be a wash. But you can shoot f/5 and smaller with most lenses, as most lenses will hit their stride performance wise, by then. The praise of lenses comes from wide-open, wide-aperture performance.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the Sigma and Canon f/1.4:

Looks like the Sigma outperforms the Canon on sharpness, CA, and contrast at all apertures.
Remember, the Sigma is a brand new design, with the latest coatings, and was just released less than 1 week ago in the US.
The Canon is at least 10 years old, and was originally intended for film only.

that is a very nice lens, but obviously at a cost. i'm not at that stage where i find myself using primes more than the zooms. on that note, how much post processing on those shots above?

That looks nice. How much is it going for? I might skip the canon 50mm 1.8 and go one step up.. the canon 1.4 would've been too much to justify at this point but if its redesigned and less expensive I might get it
