How much extra? You can always buy it as a package and sell it later on if you don't like it. I sold mine not too long ago for $300. If you're getting it as a kit lens, then I'm sure it won't cost more than $300 more. So you could actually make some money...

Not very sharp, especially around the edges. Slow at longer focal lengths (f/5.6 max aperture). AF system is good. For the price, there are better lenses but if you're willing to sacrifice image quality for a wider focal range, this is an okay lens. You're better off buying the body only and getting a better lens, or buying the kit and selling the 28 135. There's usually people that are willing to buy it.

I didn't like my 28-135mm that came with my 40D for a few reasons..

1. The end of the lens that comes out when you focus (not up to par on my photography terms ) is very heavy and when you tilt it toward the ground it extends all the way to 135. This was very frustrating when I would be taking a picture of something below me and had to hold my hand on it to keep it from falling.

2. Since the 40D is a 1.6x crop body, the 28-135 turns into a 45-215 and 45mm is not wide enough for my liking.

3. Image quality was decent, but not that great.

I wound up selling the 28-135 for about $300 and picking up a 17-85 for about $400. I like the 17-85 a lot better even though it's a slightly slower lens. Pretty much a 28-135 after the crop anyways. IMO, if you are planning on buying another lens it's worth it to buy the 28-135 kit for around $1150 and then selling the 28-135 for about $300.

#1 will happen with a lot of lenses you use in the long run. The 17-85mm will get that same problem in a year or so.

#3 28-135 image is pretty good for the money, 17-85 is slightly better, but if you want better image quality you're gonna need to shell out alot more mula, but I bet you knew that already

i think i may just buy the body and not have to worry about going through the trouble of selling a lense because i already have a pretty good wide angle

AHero (Calvin) has got $$ to burn so don't take his comments about the 28-135 too seriously. He's an "L snob" now.

But kidding aside, the 28-135's lens creep is common with alot of lenses. Some have a zoom lock.

It was my workhorse lens, as it was used for the majority of the shots I took. It has IS, which is a godsend IMO. But you may just want to hold on to it if you go full frame, which will be much more affordable in the future IMO with the current trends of DSLRs prices dropping.

As Calvin said, on a crop sensor, the 28mm is not wide enough, so you'll switch lenses often if you like wide shots. With this in mind, it does not make a good walkaround lens if you like to just go out and snap.

The only reason I don't use it as often now is that I don't really like the "normal" midrange of 30mm-75mm. Since I have the 55-250 and Tokina 11-16, they take up the focal ranges I like... really wide, or really tele. It also doesn't help that the IQ is better on these lenses.

Now it's not like the 28-135 is a dud, as the IQ is really good, but its not in the great category.

Since the 40D has a crop sensor, again, the 28-135 IS is actually a mismatch. The EF-S 17-85mm ($500) IS is the better match. But most say the IQ on this lens is worse than the 28-135. Then there's the crop only EF-S 17-55mm IS f/2.8, but it's $1000.

What Canon should do is make an affordable, metal mount 18-200mm IS, and they would be set.

In the end, I would buy the lens kit and give it a try to see if you like it. Selling photo equipment is easy, you'll be surprised. I sold my old 28-135 for $380.

Shoot, then it's a no-brainer... either go body-only, or make some money and buy the kit lens and sell.

Man, you're a baller too.

You'll love the 40D... but if I was in your shoes, I'd get the XSi. The XSi has better resolution. Sometimes, I feel the 40D is too big. If you don't need the 6fps continuous speed for action shots, the 2nd wheel, and the more rugged body, I'd seriously take a look at the XSi.

i prefer the bigger heavier feel, so i plan on gettin the 40D and then carrying my XTi with a 50mm or something. just depends on what im shooting

im doing alot of HIN shows so i need something fast so thats why i want the 40D
