^+1.. i want to get the grip for mine!

ctwentytwo - what do you think of the sunpak flashes? i've been considering ordering one or two of those. so much cheaper than the canon flashes.. yet from what everyone seems to say they are still very capable units.

Very capable, but a bit old-fashioned... no lcd screen, no zoom head, but otherwise and awesome value. Only B&H seems to have them now, and they recently got it in... so I jumped on them as they have been discontinued.

Really, it makes more sense to just get these flashes for multiple strobe set-ups, if you're thinking about trying it.

I'm just beginning my Strobist journey, and still have a lot to learn.

Does a good tripod make that much difference? That's one of the things that's on the very bottom of my list

Well, a good one will last longer than a cheap one (and likely function better too), so you will only spend the money once.

I guess it really depends on what kind of photography you enjoy doing. I like macro stuff, and a steady platform to shoot from is a huge plus, especially when exposure times can get up into the double digits in seconds.

The purple and blue flower shot in my flickr album was a 20 second exposures if I remember correctly (no way to do that hand held). The only difference between the two is white balance (same picture otherwise). I used my Ultrapod 2 for it, and that was pretty tough.

Risking thousands of dollars of equipment on a $50 tripod? No thanks.

I learned my lesson the hard way. I was doing a photo shoot back when I only had a 350d + 50 1.8 when my tripod tipped over. Luckily only the 50 1.8 broke and the body was fine.

Honestly, a good tripod setup is an investment. It doesn't matter how often you use it. As long as you take care of it, then it will last for years (I know people that have had their tripods over a decade and they work just as well as my new 055xprob + 488rc2).

$130-150 for a simple set up for the legs and tripod head, something that can hold 6-8 lbs. Not much of an investment, even if you use it sparingly.

welcome to the confusing world of color profiles. It will likely be frustrating but well worth it.

i chose to spend a little more and get the f/2.8 since i have to do high school football games and the lights really low. and i got the 1.4 extender to so i'll still be able to shoot at f/4 with that on. but overall, its my new favorite lense.

Good choice. No sports for me. Daughter is only 4mos. In a few years, if/when they release an upgrade to the f/2.8, I'll probably jump on it. For now, probably just the zoo and my home "studio".
