Oh yeah, I think I am being pretty subjective because I had a Powershot S110 before the S400 and liked it so much that I got the same size S400. I doubled my resolution and added a lot manual control with the 400.

Sony DSC-V1

List is $699, but you can find for less plus a $75 rebate from Sony until the 25th. 5 Mega Pix, tons of function, excellent low light focus and IR photo, and compact.

Other honorable mentions are Canon Rebel 300G (6.8 MP changable SLR)and Sony F818 (8 MP)

Canon S400 is a great camera.

If you're interested in something more, the Rebel 300G, as mentioned above, is a nice camera, but obviously you'll have to buy lenses.

I'm going to buy an underwater housing for my S110 for an upcoming trip to florida.

How do you tell the quality of the lens? I've seen pictures done with both the F717 and the S400 and the F717 has better quality so I don't know where your lens argument is coming from.

BTW I have a Nikon CoolPix995, it's very good but not very user friendly.

I just bought a Nikon Coolpix 5700; 5 megapixel, 8X zoom. No experience with it yet.

It has had several good reviews.

Retail is around a grand but look around on the net. I think I paid about $650 for mine.

Im very into portability.... I think its awsome to be able to put a camera in your pocket. I think im going to buy the Minolta XT as someone mentioned above. Its only 4 ounces, and its got 3X optical, and its a 3.2 megapixel.... If most of your shots are going to be 4x6 anyway you barely even need a 2 megapixel to take good shots.... Thats the truth... Does any one have experience with the minolta i mentioned above? i think its fairly new. Im gonna buy it at costco....

I've had the XT for a few months. I, like you might, bought it for the portability. The pictures are a little "soft;" you won't get the sharpness as you do with the Canons. There is also some barreling (distortion at the corners) due to the funky lens design. It has a HORRIBLE time in low light conditions, but I've found this to be a Minolta "feature."

Other than those quirks, it's a very nice camera. Since it's slim, it's comfortable in your pocket, unlike the bulkier Elph. Battery life is decent considering the size. And you can take TIFFs with it, which is really nice for this class of camera.

The S400 is only slightly larger than the XT, takes better pictures, much longer battery life, and you can get an underwater housing.

rouxeny; damn, wish I knew you needed a housing, just sold one.

How was the housing? How deep can you go? They sell for about $100 at B&H Photo Video.
