On a different note, I've been brainstorming ways to modify the deflector shield so I can change the oil, in a clean manner, without removing it. My GF's Corolla had a similar problem. I was able to cut the plastic shield under her car with my dremmel. Oil changes are a breeze now. Of course with the Z it's a bit different, considering the deflector actually serves a purpose. I'd hate to compromise the intergrity of why the panel is there or even cut an open hole in it, allowing dirty street water to splash up and dirty my immaculate engine bay.

Any thoughts?
trust me, you'd never know if your filter media leaked INTERNALLY. Your oil would LOOK the same to your naked eye but it would have a lot of microscopic metal particles in it.

OK, you guys need to look at my mod. Just take some tin snips and cut along the line as shown. Takes like 5 mins and will save you hours. You only end up taking 4 screws and a push pin out and have complete access:

Don't worry about effecting the air flow you'll find that there is enough play to overlap the panels and keep the flow smooth

Here it is before you take it off:

And after:

Nice write-up, but there's a couple things I don't get.

(refer to attached photo)

I can see where you cut the diffuser in half(red arrows). What is puzzling me are the pop rivet and bolt(blue arrows). As I recall the last time I removed my diffuser, that bolt and rivet do not exist there. I recall the rivet being futher back, as well as only having 1 bolt at each corner at the rear of the diffuser. Is this bolt and rivet something you added?

I'm wondering if all the diffusers are the same, or do the bolt patterns differ from year to year.

Does anyone use the larger Bosch filter on a 2005 (2003-2006 engine) Z? If so, what is the Bosch part number? I know 3300 is the p/n for the standard (smaller) filter, but what is the p/n for the larger Bosch?

The OEM Nissan filter is now made in China. Now I use Mobil 1.

Does anyone have any hard proof on the worth of a Fram filter?

I use Wix filters. If it's good enough for Nascar, NHRA, and the 24 Hours at Daytona cars, then I'll trust it. At my job, we sell LOTS of Wix to pro race teams all over. That has to count for something.

Your local dealership will have them. I went to the one here, and the guy in Parts gave me a couple of them for free.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually ordered 5 from that nismo shop and it only cost 5 bucks (a lot of which was from shipping). Maybe I'll go by Nissan too and see if I can also get some free ones.

I use a K&N oil filter, but I'm a K&N freak.

I use a trick from changing the oil in my 2001 prelude, the oil filter would ALWAYS leak all over the exhaust linkage (the wire mesh lookin deal) and wouldnt burn completely off for weeks. So people started putting a grocery bag or plastic over the exhaust. What I did with the z is use a garbage bag. I cut a side off so it had a bottom still and an open side, and a closed side. I cut the garbage bag protector to about 12 or so inches long then pulled it through the drain plug hole in the diffuser and out the top of the diffuser toward the wheel. Then I just opened up the little bag I created to catch all the oil, and direct out of the hole into the drain pan. It still had to wipe some oil out of the edge of the hole from pulling out the plastic, but overall it worked pretty well.

I also thought about the trap door idea... great idea!

i've seen pics of a Fram oil filter cut-in-half comparing side by side with other brands(forgot which forum), Fram was the sorry looking one. Purolator was shown to be the best bang for the buck. Napa was pretty decent.

Cant you clean the filter? Isn't that what shops do? I mean they only charge like $25 for oil change, if they're buying the filter and oil, they're not making much profit
