Vq30det!
I guess this would be interesting as a shop build for something to do to say you can do it, also to say it would be reliable as a dd boost motor. Keep in mind the technology to make this all work is going a step backwards, almost like reverse engineering. Funny thing is alot of 4th gen maxima guys and some 3rd gen maxima guys are looking for 3.5s to put in their cars which would consider a step up, not to mention boosted, or slightly built and boosted. But z guys are putting 3.0's and 4 cylinders(vr6 swap thread) in their cars?? Also us maxima guys are searching for standalone options, most of us run piggybacks, the 3.5 has more toys and aftermarket support than the 3.0. Don't quote me, but I believe on the maxima site years ago someone did a hybrid which was 3.5 heads, 3.0 block with a DET crank. There was also a DET swapped maxima but no dyno numbers ever came out in the thread.
the standalone options is going to always fall down to who is willing to make a harness , we sell our own standalones and we make the harness for most cars.( discussion was over on maxima.org )
Haltech seems to be everyone's favorite over there
we have a a32 with a VQ20DE on boost
We've seen VQ30DET in NZ running 500whp on stock block, so this is a decent swap for s14/z32 / a32-33 and z33 guys if they wanted to get a motor that is already built for boost and needs minor fab and upgrade turbo and fuel system to make decent power
....http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/show...ed-R34-Skyline....
sure
stock block holding up 500whp
And you get can the motors for a under 1K setup for boost already.

the guy you quoted thought this was about a 300zx motor and not a 350z
but I'm confused what you mean........other than the price of the motor
That was Fred that did that hybrid swap , the car is in West Palm beach still pulling hard with the new owner on spray.

Most Nissan motors that are turbo'd from the factory can hold double the factory rated power........so it's nice to see you also agree about the 500HP level
well said.......the guy BoostedMaxima that you quoted...........I didn't understand his concern about "going a step backwards" and "searching for standalone options" ????

Meant to post in this thread months ago.... better late then never.
This is my Nissan S15 Silvia Spec-R, fitted with a VQ30DET and 350Z 6-speed.... All complianced and road legal.

Talk about a clinical engine bay, very clean
Neat choice of having the motor far back like how the S15 motor is in the S15 and then moving the turbo to the front.
Nice throttle cable as well.
Great choice of the Haltech, we love them here at work, too.

Cheers guys.
No power figures as yet as its pretty much just hit the road, around 500 miles driving under its belt sorting it all out. Drives fantastically.
Turbo is a 70mm with tial 46mm gate.
Haltech platinum sport ecu, but did initially get it running with the stock ecu & nistune.
Also fitted with 264 deg 10.88mm lift cams.

glad you cleared that up
At NOPI, one of the Nopi Chics kept saying "PSI" at the motel we were at.
She later told me it meant "personally sucked it".
Obviously in this context, it implies something else.
Like I said earlier, clinical engine bay!

another side story
Sunday morning when I got up, I went to the bathroom and the floor was soaked, even on the towel that I put down WTF!!!!!!!
so I flip the light on to see what the heck is going on and there is water dripping from the ceiling
I already had a hard time sleeping because the girls above me kept walking around at like 6am and using hair dryers.
Needless to say I didn't use the potty that morning.............not knowing what the water was

So reviving this old thread. Been deciding on what to next for a vehicle. Had the Z for 6yrs now and the clock is at 153,xxx. It's burning a little oil, at about a quart every 4-5k miles. Not extreme for a 150k + mile motor that has gone through the abuse I've put it through.
I have been debating on buying a "new" to me car to modify. Or do a built motor for SC with only a goal of 400-450hp. At that Hp range for a built motor it would be very reliable to hold that power. A new car is most expensive, but a fully built motor with SC is not too far behind. So researching for other cheaper options, I came across this VQ30DET motor that I found on the JGY website. These guys also offer a stroked 4.3L DE, but I want something a little more unique.
I've sent them an email asking for some information and what kind of cost estimate I'd be looking at. Sent the email Wednesday night, so hoping for a reply soon. I'm really interested in doing this, and if my 35DE heads can used that would really help reach my goal of 400-450hp. I haven't been able to find but one 350z that has done this swap other than the Top Secret build mentioned in this thread.
Once I get a response, I'll update this thread some everyone can have some sort of idea for this swap. May be a few more days cause I was asking some detailed questions. And based on PSI's posts a 350z 6spd trans can be fitted, but I'd be using 5AT since the motor originally came out of an 5AT.

Nothing really to be gained. Less displacement than the 35 and the turbo is too small too make any real power. You'd end up replacing it anyways. Probably looking at less money and more power/reliability to throw a single on the VQ35. I've never been a fan of, "why not" as a good reason to do anything.

Cobra - I won't completely disagree with you that this is not a "why not" build, but the basis of the build is a replacement for a tiring engine. Could I get away with buying a slightly used VQ35, slap on a kit, and call it day...of course. I'm not sure that I'd fully agree on cost being that different doing either because there's definitely a cost difference in upgrading a engine that was originally NA vs. once that is already Turbo'd.
I would agree with you that this is a "why not" build as why not something different. I'm not much of a "go with the crowd" type of person. Would I get more power of a VQ35: 90%-Yes and 10%-No. Pending if the VQ35 heads can fit on the VQ30, it would allow for more tuning options that could benefit form turning up the boost with the lower compression. This is still my DD, so a goal of 400hp I feel is plenty to stay reliable for daily and have fun on the weekends.
