Seriously, I know you had good intentions and I'm not trying to bust your *****, but that was probably the best thing that could have happened. I was fearing something more along the lines of you having to make an emergency maneuver and losing control and hurting/killing yourself and possibly others.
Unfortunately I have a sneaky suspicion you're going to continue doing it anyway. Oh well.
The V1 has served me in California for better than 10 ticket-free years but you have to be reasonable as if you're sailing through traffic you'll just get a reckless driving ticket based on sight observations. 85 sounds pretty reasonable here and the guy must have just picked you out from everyone else going that fast for a ticket.
I don't understand those of you who worship your V1's and its arrows. Whats the difference, your going to slow down wether the cop is infront of you or behind you. Unless your planning on running from the cops and see the rear arrow and decide to speed up I don't see any advantage. I bet if the V1 wasn't as expensive as it is, less people would have it. Half of the people buy it just cause it has the highest price tag so it must be good. I'm not saying it doesn't work well, it just obviously over priced.
The police have different tactics in different locations. I haven't spent enough time in Georgia to offer an opinion but in the few weeks a year I spend in and around Atlanta it seems that traffic respects the speed limits a whole lot more than here.
When traffic conditions allow most people here will routinely be +15 to +20 over the limit. The sign says 55 and traffic is doing 70. The sign says 65 and traffic is doing 75 or 80. What the California Highway Patrol (the real CHiPs) will do is to enter traffic and use a doppler radar while moving.
Local city cops are more likely to set up a traditional radar trap where they park and wait for prey - my local city has hunter-killer motorcycle cop teams where the hunter parks his bike off a side street, walks away from his cycle with the radar gun's cord pulled tight. He nails the speeder and radios his killer(s) who pull you over a couple of blocks away and issue the ticket. When I'm in the city the arrows help me understand where the radar signals are coming from = a side street, from behind or a head (heading toward the trap) or just random stuff from some automatic doors.
But it's really on the highway where I might violate the speed limits. Once you're out of the Los Angeles metro area there are some rather large, well maintained, and empty freeways (time of day depending). Just to the east of me there is a place where the 60 freeway runs though the badlands. A very interesting road.
If I'm on a highway and the detector goes off of course i'm going to slow down. If the arrow is in front of me I'm either coming into the active side of speed trap or I'm catching an on coming CHiP flipping his unit on and off as he works up from behind someone looking for a whopper of a ticket to issue. If I get a rear arrow either I've just entered a speed trap facing the other way and will look over my shoulder looking for the patrol unit or there's a CHiP stalking up my side of the highway with a doppler unit ... big time danger!
The CHiP will sail along in the number one lane at 90 or better looking a half mile or more ahead for cars that are passing others. A quick few second burst of radar from behind confirms the speed from a distance and the officer then pulls that guy over ... or worse they'll get into your blind spot and pace you for X number of seconds. When there's a CHiP working up from behind I get into the slow lane and force myself to stay there until he's well past me.
There are some well known active areas of "enforcement" like the 215/15 split up in San Bernadino and the few miles north of there to Victorville. A second area that I've seen very active radar sights is that long (LONG) stretch of highway between Baker and the state line running to Las Vegas on the 15. I don't do 'Vegas on the weekends so the enviornment might be different going on a Friday and coming back on a Sunday as a few hundred thousand LA residents deposit their welfare checks into Nevada's one armed ATM machines.

radar does not prevent you from getting tickets. cops are smart now, they dont turn their radars on until they see you. by that time, the radar doesnt sound until hes already clocked you. i have v1 and got caught like this recently, 54 in 40. by the time i saw him, i braked, but i was probably going 70+.
drive smart, dont speed too much if you are the only one on the road. radars will only work if the cop has his radar on. so make sure there is a car in front of you.
