Default March 18-19: NASA HPDE at Road Atlanta

There will be another HPDE at Road Atlanta in March. It's the first one of the year. Below is the link. It's a 2 day school with an instructor in your, plus classroom session. It's a great way to test and build on your driving skills and test the limits of your car.

I've signed up for HPDE 2.

What kind of track time do you get at these events? How well are they organized?

They are organized well. There are 4 groups, HPDE 1 and 2 are the driving school groups. 3 & 4 are for the instructors and racers. There are also races throughout the day. Usually, when you aren't on the track, you're in the class or have a break for a short period to watch or relax. There are usually about 4 30 minute track sessions each day. Last time at Road Atlanta, I drove about 100 - 120 miles each day. I got 7.2 mpg on the track that weekend so the car was pushed pretty hard. I have some in-car video if you'd like me to post it. HPDE 1 and 2 get individual instructors the whole weekend. You get to work on driving skills with someone next to you who is very experienced. They will focus on safety and on advanced driving skills. This will be my 4th time at Road Atlanta. It is a very challenging track and the weekends are incredible fun. There is usually a group of about 10 us of who go who have gone to several of these, so it is also social as well. We all have a great time and learn a hell of a lot. We enjoyed these things so much, we rented out Talladega Grand Prix Raceway for the day on the 28th. We'll be going there to have more track time!

I would definitely recommend these HPDE's.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. Sounds like a great time. I saw the post about TGPR, I wish I could make it to that one. That is a great track, I went with my old car.

There is another post about the Talladega event, somewhere in the Southeast section. There is a link over to the rx8 board with more info.

Still open slots for talladega? I'm down in dothan and would make the drive for some track time. It would be my first track event so it would be good if someone with some more experience could do a little instructing with me.

We rented out the track for the day on Jan 28th. It's mostly RX-8 folks, but we also have a track prepped Evo8, a WRX, and a Cobra going. The Evo guy knows the owner and we got the track for $125 apeice for the whole day. We usually get together at Road Atlanta or Roebling for track days and we decided to set one up for ourselves. With only 10 of us and the whole track for the day, we'll have lots of track time. 3 of us are driving instructors (with NASA, SCCA, BMW, and Porsche club) so there will be lots of instruction too. It should be one hell of a time. I'll post some in-car footage when I get back and hopefully next time we do it, some folks from here will want to sign up too. The more the merrier.

Hope to see you there. There will be about 8 or 10 of us there with various vehicles. I'll be in the Green RX-8 one with R compound tires, in HPDE 2. Please come by. We usually make a weekend of it and have dinner and tell track stories most of the evening. Might be cheesy, but we're just a bunch of gearheads getting together for car stuff, so what else is there to do?

Where in South GA are you? We've got several SCCA Autocross regions here. The Mid GA meets in Cordele at the track there and the Dixie Region (FL) has events a little north of Valdosta. Care to come to any autocrosses?

I believe all of our slots are full. We could only have 10 go since more than that requires corner station workers and additional costs. Next time, which I'm sure there will be, I'll post it again on this board too. You close to TGPR? Would you like to at least come out to the track?

Just got back from a wonderful track day at TGPR. I'll let everyone know when the next one will be. Please get geared up for the Road Atlanta HPDE. It's one hell of a track. BTW, this is evidence of a good hard day on the track. These are 0 treadwear R compounds that were sticky as hell. They lived a good life.... We had more constant radius right handers than lefts.

Thanks for the info. I have done a number of track days. One in PA and a second at that Talledega track for a prelude meet that we had a few years back. This is my first time with a RWD car on the track and a first with the Z. Do you recommend the HPDE 1? I might do this.

Definitely HPDE 1. RoadA is a challenging track with a lot of elevation changes and difficult brake zones. You should do HPDE 1 if it's your first time at the track.

How many cars are on the track at once?
Approximately how many participants have there been in the past?
