Default North Carolina Speeding Question

So I got my first ticket in the Z on Saturday and have a quick question about it. I was going south on 17 and definitely had one of the good ol' boys sneak up behind me and pace me doing 80 in a 55. When he gave me the ticket it was on a printout with a court date. The trooper said it was a must appear. So, my question is; Am I going to get charged with more than speeding since I was 25 mph over?

I definitely would rather just mail in the cash and take the points cause I really don't have a leg to stand on. It was pretty cut and dry, I was speeding, he snuck up on me, I got caught, he won. But apparently the state of NC isn't gonna let that fly. Any suggestions?

You have to appear because 20 or more over the limit is considered reckless driving. You DEFINATELY do not want to just take the points because your insurance will go way up.

Get a lawyer and if it's anything like New Hanover county, you won't have to appear, it will be dismissed and you'll have no points. The lawyer will cost you about $250 which is way cheaper than the insurance increase.

What town/county were you in?

I was near Shalotte, I gotta appear in Bolivia for court. I guess I'll look into getting a lawyer. Anyone know a good one in that area?

Hmm, do you live in MD ? I've had numerous friends as well as a personal experience with going to court in a totally different state. It tends to get thrown out 90% of the time with the judge just saying take it easy, thanks for taking the time to show up. But since its one of the mandatory things I cant say for sure, sad face.

Good luck

You definitely need a lawyer. One of my classmates, Lee Bollinger, is Assistant DA down there in Brunswick County. He probably can't help you though. I suggest calling Bruce Mason (910) 763-8106. He is a board certified specialist in criminal law and practices in the area of traffic law. If he can't help you he can refer you to someone who can.

you do have to go to court. if you don't wanna lose you license then get a lawyer. in the state of North Carolina you will automatically lose you drivers license if you are speeding more than 15 MPH over the posted speed limit and and the posted speed limit is 55 or more. this is why you are required to appear in court. even if you don't get completely off the hook than you will more than likely atleast be able to keep your license if you get a lawyer.

by the way slow down. there is a time and a place and the highway isn't it
