Default So tell me about living in NC/SC

Well I saw this coming for a while now and finally I got let go today due to downsizing. I currently live in Wisconsin and would love to have a change of scenery from the midwest. I am looking to relocate to the NC/SC area. Ive never been there but have always wanted to check it out. So if anybody lives there or has visited there, let me know what you think of it. For those of you that live there is there anything that makes you go "I hate living here because of _____"?
Thanks in advance!

SC >> NC as far as car laws go. No inspection, lax on tint laws, exhaust noise/emissions and FI.

Both states have mountains and beaches and large cities. IMO Charlotte > Columbia, but i like smaller "big" cities like Greenville, SC and Spartanburg. With G-ville and S-burg you can live in a country setting and only be 20 min away from the city center. Are you tired of the wisconsin countryside?

I hate Asheville....Price of gas in NC is high as well.

I live in Raleigh, weather is awesome, job market is solid. Only a few hours from mountains and beaches. VIR is only like 1.5 hours away.

win win win

I really like living in madison, but the winters are just brutal on me. Im tired of putting the car up for what seems like 9 months of the year lol. I grew up in Michigan so the midwest is just kinda getting old, time for a change.

I like South Carolina is OK. State is kind of backwards on a lot of things and we have our fair share of rednecks and other assorted country-folk. Aside from that its nice. No emissions testing is a win, and there are plenty of nice areas. Overall, its not bad, and it may be a good change of pace for you.

NC is very spread out, the urban centers (Charlotte, Raliegh, Wilmington) are miles apart from one another. I stay in Fayetteville, the ******* of NC so dont come here at any cost! I think you'll like VA, it better than both states, but the car laws suck!

I'm currently stationed in a smaller town 40 mins from Columbia, SC. Cost of living is nothing down here.... I hate the hot and humid summers... plenty of larger cities around(Columbia, Charleston, Charlotte, Greenville, Myrtle Beach) so I dont feel too isolated lol

having lived in ohio for 21yrs before moving to NC, I never thought I would say it but I miss the snow. I don't miss the terribly longggggg winters and below freezing weather, but I could handle a few more snow days around here. If I had to do it again, I probably would. The only thing I would do differently is move to the mountain side of the state. Still have snow and more seasonal winter but the summers are your typical NC summer, HOT AND HUMID!!! But there are several lakes around to quinch that thirst as well.

I live in Raleigh, and I LOVE it... Went to High School & College in the Midwest (Ohio), and upon graduation I just HAD to go! The weather is great down here, the women are hot, beaches and mountains within a couple hours & the Job market is the BEST according to FORBES for the 3rd year in a row... Plus, we need more z's down here, we can't seem to get our **** together...

Been in SC my whole life. Depends on what ya want. Columbia is good, Charleston is Good and so is Greenville. Those are the three places I have lived. I'm in Greenville now, and its OK for now. Since i have been hear my whole life its time for me to go some where new. But if i had to recommend a place to some one i would say Greenville.

House prices low, still growing into a city, but still small enough to be nice and quite, I would suggest living in the county. Mauldin, Simpsonville and Greer are all surrounding Greenville and the are all growing in size. Im 10 min drive from Downtown and am living in a 3br 2 bath 2 car garage for 120k and im in the county and avoid city tax!

Best part is your 3 hrs from Charleston (Beach) hour from 3 huge lakes, and if mountains are your thing NC/TN is a few hrs NW.

Jobs are another story, if you already have one and are being transffered then go to Greenville! Hope this helps

Cheers

Kevin

Thank you for all the info. It gave me a good place to start looking for apartments/houses. I was very pleasantly surprised at the cost of living

I live in concord, just outside of charlotte. I love it. I'm originally from raleigh and I like it up this way much better. I like the pace and the people. You'll find that its not your typical NC mixture in charlotte as many people are from out of town/state.

I live in Davidson which is about 15min from Charlotte. I really enjoy living here, everything is close by (mall, city, clubs, etc.) we have a decent size lake which is great for fishing, jet-ski, boating. Schools are good and crime rate is low, nice peaceful communities, job market is good. Also a lot of Z enthusiast in the area along with a nice shop (CIN Motorsports) that specializes in our cars.

Coming from NYC it was a complete culture shock because everyone is so nice and the streets are clean. Only things I don't like are the girls and rednecks, visit a club nearby and you will see what I mean. I have family in FL and the clubs there are always packed with hot women, not here!

When I moved down here over 10 years ago there was still a lot of prejudice, being Spanish this was somewhat difficult, even though I don't look like it. Being Spanish automatically makes you Mexican according to the ignorant redneck mentality, luckily over the years these small towns have grown, trailer parks knocked down and we have had a lot of people coming in from all over so the problem has improved.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

I stay in Charlotte and Cola, SC. I def Like Charlotte more. There is def a good mixture of people from a lot of places. Cola is alright more country people on the outer parts. But like said Laws for cars are a lot better in SC!

Pollen makes it near impossible to keep your car clean...
