Being the geek that I am I'm naturally going to install a in-car PC in my new Z. I've been doing some reading on what I'll need, seems like the hardest part will be cutting the pocket area for the screen. Anyone here done anything like that? How hard is it to get the center console apart? I'm guessing my next purchase will be one of those big tech manuals...

Any advice? I've got the PC side of things covered, want to do GPS (mainly), music, movies, web surfing, etc. I'll also have to get an inline FM modulator for sound, anyone use one of those yet?

Also if I find it too hard to cut the dash myself who would you guys recommend in the Boulder area?

Not that I know of - my 07 doesn't have a cassette deck so I don't see any other way to tap into it other than an in-line FM Modulator. I've heard those aren't that bad since they are direct inline and not really "wireless" like the dinky little iPod ones.. If there's another way I'm all for it...

FM modulaters are ****. Don't ruin your sound like that.

There are a number of ways of doing it, and I think I tried them all. The first was a PAC-Audio adapter that goes in the wiring harness behind the radio, and allows you to plug RCA connections in, thus allowing you to play the computer sound over the stock head unit. It actually worked pretty well for me. I'm not sure if PAC-Audio makes one that will work with the 07's or not yet.

Finally, though I ripped out my entire stock head unit, and put in a new one, along with amps and new speakers and new wire. Probably a bit more than you are looking for.

I have done an in-car PC. I have a 2003, I purchase the navigation motorized door and mounted my 7" Lilliput touchscreen to it. I will post some pics up later, it looks like a factory install.

Wait, is the navi door different if you have the navigation? I didnt think they had a true motor door, just the push button watch the door go away setup... Am i wrong?

I ordered the Lilliput 7" one today - am getting the laptop I'm going to use all setup. I also ordered a in-line FM Modulator (it was only $19.99) so if that sucks I'll go the adaptor route. I'm actually gonna look at that next...

Im working on a setup right now utilizing the AVIC D2 navi unit plus a touchscreen in the cubby that will be hidden. I will have my laptop connected to the touchscreen with wifi capabilities. That way its plug n play. And doesnt need as much power as a 500W power supply that a desktop would use. I just upgraded the battery- very important especially if you plan on building a system. I will post pics when I am done, I just started so its guna be a while considering I'm always travelling.

Still wanna know about that navi door, if there is some sort of differance. Right now i push it and it goes away then i pull it back out and close it on my own. Is there some sort of full auto version?

Funny, i was just looking at that today. Those are the same guys who made a Z AWD, really really badass rides they have around that shop, very impressed.

My nav door is fully motorized. (Opens and shuts on its own) I'm not sure which years this was offered in the Z. My Z is an '03 and my nav door is an '04.

However, if you don't have the factory navigation you need a custom controller made to operate the door. (My friend made it for me.) I bought the the controller unit from the dealership so I could get the mounting bracket and ribbon cable, then my friend replaced the circuit board with his own design. Definitely outta my league, but I can ask him if he can make anymore.

I went this route because the factory nav is a 7" screen so all I had to do was take my 7" touchscreen out of its housing and mount it to the opening intended for the nav screen.
