Whow! That sim lap looked like I was driving with a sticky joystick. The sides of your virtual car would have sparks (and paint) flying off! Also, animation in that form made it hard to visualize where you were on the circuit.
Despite that, it shouldn't stop anybody from donating what they can! It's our future playground and a little now will go a long way...

When this track is built, they're not going to let that guy drive on it, right? And our money is being used to build mountains in Eastern Colorado, then? Wow. It's amazing how a couple of million dollars can make that place look like Estes Park. Very nice, I had no idea they were so ambitious.

There has been a lot of volunteers giving their time and expertise to make this track happen.
Here's a list of ackowledgments to those people.

I talked with HPR manager Charlie Thompson today. Nothing new to report at this point, but we should know more by next month about the USR permit. In the meantime, donations are still desperately needed.
Believe it or not, my MARCH '08 column (including the update about HPR) for SportsCar magazine is due this week. Wish that crystal ball would start working...

update----
January 2, 2008 – HPR What's Happening!
Happy New Year! I am excited about 2008, as this is the year when
all the dreams and hard work come to fruition with the opening of
High Plains Raceway. Hard to believe it has been four years since
the clubs created CAMA!
We have what we hope to be our final public hearing scheduled for
late January with the Arapahoe County Board of County Commissioners.
If our Use by Special Review (USR) receives approval in that meeting,
get ready for a busy year. We have tentatively scheduled the land
closing for two days after the Commissioners meeting. The design &
construction team is working hard to have the construction permits
ready to submit at the same time.
December was an exceptionally busy month for the design team. Track
designs and grading/drainage plans were sent to Alan Wilson for his
oversight. A conference call was held amongst Wilson Motorsport; RG
Consulting and Plan West Inc with primary emphasis on turn and run-
off area configurations. Then on December 16th this team spent the
day walking the land and driving the track layout. A couple inches
of snow packed into a natural road base to give us a great feel of
the track features. Oh, by the way the track features are awesome!
The results of the safety review will soon be available, however the
most notable change appears to be a possible repositioning of the
front straightaway farther east to provide additional run-off at the
end of the straight. The new email news service on the web site has
been quite successful, so sign up soon so you don't miss any updates
on our progress. Site tours are also available through the Contact
Us page at www.HighPlainsRacew ay.com .
Fundraising has slowed through the holidays and we are currently at
the $430,000 level. The thermometer has also been adjusted for the
current construction loan availability from CAMLC of $350,000.
Thanks to all who have contributed. The rest of you please quit
procrastinating (especially with the pending USR approval & land
purchase soon to be completed) and write those checks. Once the USR
is approved and we have closed on the land, we will have everything
in place except the funding, so we need everyone to do their part
NOW!
At this point we have accumulated $1,663,000, 59%, of our
construction budget of $2,800,000. A few more contributions and
increases in loan availability will easily bring us to this level,
but what will it buy? The construction budget was based on a usable
track with some paddock improvements, basically the minimum to get us
started racing. That minimum requirement will probably increase
slightly as safety concerns are requiring more grading and barriers
than planned. Also, the current paddock design is larger than
originally planned. While these base construction costs are not yet
detailed, it is anticipated that the three million dollar thermometer
will fund just the `basic' facility we have planned as a minimum.
The clubs have all worked too hard to settle for a bunch of rented
blue buildings. So please, help us through your generosity to build
more of the facility now!
With a successful completion of the County Permit process, we are
finally going to be able to claim, that our clubs will have an
exciting track design, permit approval, a construction plan and land
under CAMA ownership. All that remains is for you to help us
complete the fundraising campaign. Why settle for the minimum? Let's
build a real restroom and support buildings too! Keep the
contributions coming and tell your friends you are a `founding
contributor' .
Sincerely,
Charlie Thompson

The USR for High Plains Raceway has been approved by a unanimous vote by the county. Closing for the land is schduled on the 31st.
This despite a land owner who lives 5 miles away and complains about noise from the semi trucks driving on us 36, and us denver drivers that aren't used to slow moving farm implements.

Today is a big day in the HPR story, we have eclipsed the $2 million dollar mark in total fundraising. We need to end up in the neighborhood of $2.8 - $3.0 million total to have a reasonable facility. Obviously more money means more and better amenities (real buildings with bathrooms and showers, RV pedestals, day garages, etc)
Here's what we have so far:
CAMA "seed" money - $883,000 (this is the money that was rebated to the clubs from SCR and reinvested in CAMA, plus the $50k from each of the clubs treasuries, plus some other miscellaneous monies)
Fundraising Donations - $455,000 (MINIMUM needed is $500,000, goal is $1 million)
Loans - $700,000 (this is money that is being made available for loan to CAMA from various members of the CAMA clubs, goal is $1.4 million. Money is added to the total when the signed commitment papers are given to CAMA)
Total as of 1/28 - $2,038,000

The HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY Email News Service
NEWS FLASH!
As you probably know, last week the Arapahoe County Commissioners unanimously approved the USR application for High Plains Raceway. As planned, that very important final regulatory step triggered CAMA to exercise their long-standing option to purchase the property. CLOSING on the property was finalized this afternoon, January 31st. WE NOW OWN THE LAND! Many more details will follow early next week, both by this email service and on the website.
Stay tuned and SPREAD THE WORD!!! HPR is the "real" deal.

Don't read this till midnight.
It's amazing how many people turn up to volunteer the experience in getting this track built.

February 3, 2008 – HPR What's Happening!
I just love the feeling when a plan comes together! In January we
have realized that emotion many times.
The biggest achievement this month was receiving unanimous approval
of the Arapahoe County Board of County Commissioners for our Use by
Special Review (USR) application. Other than the printing of the
official documents, we have now met all the regulatory requirements
to operate HPR. Bill Howard (RMVR) and his company Plan West Inc
provided the BoCC with a very impressive presentation. We thank the
County planning staff for their support and guidance. We are
especially grateful to Bill for all of his hard work.
I am proud to state that we now own the land to replace Second
Creek. This purchase was consummated after five plus years, numerous
property searches, an untold number of meetings and a lot of hard
work by too many people to list in this letter. Many thanks to Tom
Ragonetti (SCCA) and Jim Johnson of his firm for ensuring that CAMA
was properly protected by all the closing documents.
The land and permit acquisition were not even the most significant
accomplishments this month. Since placing an offer on this property
many concerns existed over water availability. Our change-of-use
application for the existing well on the HPR property was approved
last week. We now have a permit allowing for more water than we
could ever need for commercial, domestic or irrigation uses. This is
a big deal as we had all but conceded to the fact that we would have
to haul water to the site. A few months back, a Mercedes Club
member, Reiner Haubold approached us after a fundraising meeting
offering his expertise in water management. That expertise proved
extremely valuable as he knew the right steps and proper questions.
With the persistence of Bob Darcey (RMVR), the two patiently applied
and reapplied after each denial until finally the old records for the
well were found and a Department of Water Resources Geologist finally
concluded that Reiner was correct, ruling that the well was eligible
for commercial designation. Awesome job and both deserve many thanks.
The many members of the CAMA clubs also reached a major milestone in
January as the `fundraising thermometer' has surpassed two million
dollars and is now at $2,094,000. So far we have 178 contributors
who have purchased `Bricks'. The `Bricks' start at $1,000, which is
a small portion of a race weekend in Hastings or Pueblo. Have you
inscribed your Brick yet?
The design, engineering and construction team have also had a busy
month. The site tours and discussions in December resulted in some
minor modifications to the entry and exit of the front straightaway
along with the bobsled turns. Safety concerns were one aspect but
improving the fun factor has been the greatest dynamic.
Construction costs are still a major variable to be finalized.
Grading estimates have fluctuated dramatically as we have made
changes to track layout and run-off areas. Estimates on compaction
rates of the farmed soil have also impacted these calculations. To
provide the group with the needed tools to properly determine grading
and asphalt requirements we have recently hired a crew to prepare an
accurate topographical survey of the construction areas. Also
extensive soil sampling was recently completed and that data will
soon be available. We anticipate that this data overlaid with the
completed design, will enable the group to finally be able to
determine the best combination of dirt compaction and asphalt
thickness, allowing us to obtain firm construction quotes soon.
Your clubs' boards of directors, their CAMA representatives, our many
volunteers and advisors have nearly completed their task to make HPR
a reality. Now it is up to the club members. Inscribe your `Brick'
