Default Shop that does Lexan near San Diego or Huntington?

As some of you know my car is down in San Diego at VRT and I am picking it up late next week. My windshield is cracked and instead of replacing it with another glass one I wanted to see if I could do a lexan one. Is there any shops near or in San Diego or Huntington Beach that does this sort of stuff? I say Huntington Beach too because my parents have a house down there which I will probably stay at overnight so I don't have to drive from Vegas to SD and back in one day with a trailer. If any of you know of a place that doesn't have a waiting list to get in, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Mike

P.S...Its also a plus if they can install an aftermarket steering wheel for me too. I am scared of the airbags so I don't think I want to attempt it myself.

Mike, I was considering changing the windshield to Lexan too, but the downsides worry me a bit.

Only about 25-40 lbs weight savings and you have to worry about haziness and durability. The rear glass is not a big deal, but the front will definitely take more abuse Just FYI bro

Really only 20-40 lb weight savings!? Plus they would have to fabricate a center support and weld it somewhere. I have no idea what it would cost and truly the only way I would do it is if it weren't that much more than replacing the glass, which I am sure it would be way more. I just thought I would give it a try. Thanks for the link Rick. I will hit them up to see what they can do. I will most likely have them do a lexan rear when I go down there if they can get me in. We will see if I end up with a windshield as well...

Yeah, i've seen a lot of people take out everything and lexan up as much as they could, but the front windshield seems to be untouched due to the negative factors. That is why I have been second guessing myself on doing it.

Hey Mike,

Since I'm picking up those encl. from you, I can help install the aftermarket steering wheel. Just bring it by. I'll send you a PM with more details.

If you can install my steering wheel and remove my airbags on Sun. the 15th I will give you the boxes. How does that sound? I will help you too, but you have to do the airbag part.

Just disconnect the battery for 10 min. I have a puller that fits the Z good if you need one.

For the windshield, most groups won't allow plexi/lexan for the front... it has to be pretty thick to pass (around 3/8" i think) which is almost impossible to form. It definetely won't be street legal, if you care.

For other lexan work, or if Gary's busy you can try:

RMR in Huntington Beach www.rmrproducts.com

and Ron Lummus Racing in Anaheim www.ronlummusracing.com

Thanks 03Z33! I think I am over the lexan windshield thing after researching it more. I definately want the rear glass switched out though. So the airbags need a special tool?

No special tools needed, just a generic steering wheel puller. The threads on the Nissan are a little different than most domestic cars, so it's sometimes difficult to find the right bolts, but I have them if you need.

No worries, I got the tools too! We've done atleast 10 different Z's, not including other cars.

So the airbags can be removed without incident (my car's dont have airbags either).

In regards to lexan, I'm getting my rear window done as we speak. Hopefully by the 15 I can have it back in time for you to look at. The shop that does all of our plastics/lexan is highly recommended by California Speedway down the street.

Awesome man. That sounds damn good. How long will it take to do the steering wheel/airbags? Do you want to start on it Saturday night or Sunday morning?

The choice is yours. I would prefer Sunday as it only takes about an hour or so for both airbags to be removed and install your new aftermarket steering wheel. However, I know you have a busy schedule driving back home, so we can play it by ear.
