Default What's the deal with no front plates?

Should I start drilling holes on the bumper or can I get away with a just a plate at the back?

Whats the law behind this?

california law says you need to have front plate on your front bumper. even having plates behind your windshield can constitute a ticket

Don't know the reasoning behind the law, but don't drill holes in your bumper! Check this product out:

http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchan..._Code=ZEE-BRCT

When I went to pick up my car a couple weeks ago, Metro Nissan had already installed this for me. I totally lucked out because I've heard stories about dealers drilling the holes for you. I took it off and I figure I'll put it back if I ever catch any static for not having my front plate on.

Here's what it looks like installed (not my car):

5200 VC (vehicle code) makes it necessary to "securely" install a front plate on your car. Some cities have a fine of up to $100, San Francisco for instance, if you are cited for a no front plate.

I also have the zee bracket, and I love it.
The only problem is having to take it off when you're car needs towing, since it's mounted in the same location as your tow hook. I think it also blocks airflow into your engine, so you may want to take off the front plate when racing your car. IMO.

It's weird that I see so many Z's here in the OC with no front plates. I wonder if they get away with it.

i was dropping my mom off at the airport, in the airport i stop at a red light,
this cop walks up to my car and asks me if my car was new and if not i need the front lincense plates.. or else its a ticket...
i was like sir.. i just got my car out of the bodyshop and i showed him the front plates that was inside of my car.
so he let me go with a warning.
so i went to Homedepot and got some L shape brakets for wood and taped it with M3 double side tape and its all good now~

i will have some pictures soon

Yeah, they're pretty much cracking down on that. Only sucky part is most plates ruin the look of an aftermarket bumper.

I dunno I'm not a native but that is one of the reasons they require them. I know there is a large amount of intersection collisions in California. I also read those things cause alot of collisions also with people trying to beat the camera..

Because it's the magical land of the OC, nothing bad ever happens there. Seriously though, my friend has never had a front plate on his Tacoma, going on four years now and has never ben cited.

Also, the front plate in CA was a requirement long before the advent of intersection cameras.

Hey skip2daZ, was it a fix it ticket or just a regular ticket that you can pay and forget about it. Also did you get stopped when you got the ticket or did you get it while you were parked... I'm asking b/c I'm in Santa Monica a lot and would like to avoid and unnecessary tickets.

Thanks

well it was a parking ticket... just pay it and forget about it.
But when i was pulled over for that on my maxima in west hollywood, i had to go and clear it, which was just a waste of time.

but i think the only reason i got it was because the meter was empty so he gave me two tickets at once... but since im always in that very same spot while im at work, im woried that he'll notice that i never have my plates and will continue to write tickets, but we'll see...

This is really ridiculous, got one today. I think its a waste of time considering over 1/2 the cars on the road dont have them. I'll put mine on, fix it, then take it right back off. Zip ties baby.
