Helmet
lol. PLEASE dont buy a helmet from walmart and goto the track.
insanechick, i am assuming you need one for a roadcourse/hpde. make sure to get one with a SA rating, not the M. the M (motorcycle) one should be ok for running at drag strips... as they never check. besides, dont you have to wear one only if you are faster then 13.00 sec?
soloracer.com is a great place with an awesome price. i am in a market for one too. but i want to test-fit one before i buy it online. wearing my motorcycle one at hpde is getting old for me..

I don't go road racing so I don't know the rules there but M is sure fine for Drag
I got my Azonic M2000 for about $120 at a Motorcycle shop corner of Ventura and Topanga in Woodland Hills and I love it. It's not too heavy and I can see in it

You only need one if you run 13.99 or faster on the drag strip. I need to get one too, but the track I go to lends them out for free.
there are some good ones off eBay (don't get second hand). go for the bigger brands maybe? go try the helmets at a motor sports store to get the right size before ordering.
also, i find that motorcycle helmets aren't as well suited for motor sport driving because
1) they are heavy and strains your neck for long periods of use
2) motor sport helmets have a slimmer profile than motorcycle helmets and afford more headroom when you drive
3) motorcycle helmets are designed for a body learning forward where the neck and chin design is further away from the body. in a car, the opposite applies: you are sitting upright and leaning back, forcing your chin closer to your chest.

I went with a motorcycle helmet because, it's much lighter, there's much more headroom

just remember it's for your protection not the tracks...
I know I'm beating a dead horse but I was beyond happy that I was wearing a helmet when I hit the wall in january at 100mph...as a matter of fact that is another reason I'm putting in an ugly roll bar now...better safe than sorry
Well, not only was I not wanting to wear those helmets, the weather was too damn hot and humid for me to really wear them anyway. Down here in TX, the real hot and humid weather impacts our times greatly, so I wasn't hitting 13s too often. They only told me once to wear it and that was the end of it.
Screw Austin.. Dallas is where it's at! I live in Dallas area, if you haven't noticed. We got cooler Zs and owners too.
If you have a $10 head. Buy a $10 helmet.
You should always buy the best helmet you can afford... even if you're a weekend or once-every-three-month racer. cuz when you need it most, you will regret spending $50 on an ebay special. its freakin' safety equipment.
analogy: When you stick your hand in the oven, do you use napkins or an oven mit?
Simpson racing is in Torrance, their showroom is quite nice, Voyager-class helmets run in the $400. and that is a good entry level SA2005 helmet.
Sparco helmets are in the mid 500-$700. on sale if you can still find SA2000 variants.
Bell helmets (M2) run mid $350s to low 500s for the lighter weight helmets.
SA2005 can be used competitively until 2015 (10 years).. you can save some cash on an SA2000, but note that 2010 is only 4 years away. (really depends on long u plan on racing. in 4 years you may want to buy another helmet anyway)
check the Motorsports forum, we have alot of discussion on helmets there...
--Cheston (personally uses a Sparco WTT-F1 SA2000, gf uses Simpson Super Voyager SA2005)
