Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago. It's in the middle of a 2-year construction project. Over the winter, there was good road butting up against old road, and when the snow plows came through, they tore it all up. Add in the frost heaves that we get every winter, and this is why I don't ever commute in the Z, and I have a 1995 Geo Prism instead (actually, a pretty good commuter car, 33-34 mpg during rush hour, and it's the same as a Toyota Corolla). In the past week, I've bent a steel rim and broke a tire belt when I got owned by a pothole, and a different pothole blew out one of my front shocks. Oh, and to add to the fun, scrapers are stealing manhole covers for $$$, and one was missing in the left lane of the express lanes last week. I love midwest winters. Don't complain about LA streets. You don't get snow.

Northeast has pot holes that will eat tanks. No other region in the US has as much of a drastic temperature change with so much humidity/moisture.

I was driving my civic west on 90/94 where it splits off to 57 and hit a pothole that destroyed my tire. Even with that in mind....the roads in Detroit are terrible! I've never been to NYC, but, I can't see them being worse than Detroit. There are massive amounts of tires and car parts just sitting on the side of the road from the craters on the expressway.

I'm not saying the NE doesn't have bad roads. You guys have horrific winters out there. I just think it's funny that a thread like this was started by a guy in freakin' LA. C'mon, gimme a break.

Interesting avatar, BTW.

Yes I have to agree New York ( the city ) has some roads but downtown L.A has some bad ones to around the Alameda and Olympic area.

WV has the nicest roads in the Union. Most are smooth as glass and great to drive on. (Thank you Senator Byrd!!)

Come on over to the Richmond Metro Area. A recent study puts us at 53% of roads are congested and 80% (yes eighty) percent of roads need some repair while a little over 40% are in bad disrepair. Most of the intersate material going through Richmond (64 and 95) is HORRIBLE. Richmond city has one of the highest claims rates for damages on a public road on the east coast (though I don't know what is it nationally). I don't think it's as bad as New York or Detroit, but it is worse than Atlanta (I spent 22 years on their roads...bad and always under construction) and DC. My 240 hates it here!
