I got a message from her the other day saying she 'tried' to contact her insurance. How long a window should I give her before I make the report formal and contact my insurance?

I wouldn't contact "my" insurance unless you know that she doesn't have any.
What ever happened to a hit and run report ?

the police took the report and didn't file it so we can work it out. If they file the report, it shows up on carfax as an accident. I don't want that.
