Where to you come back on the 8?

Will I have to watch for crossing wildlife?

Sort of. Banner Road is route 78:

Sunrise highway is the one that goes through the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and out to I-8, which you take back into town. The roads up there are smooth and well paved. No near border excursions on this route, so no chance of running down illegals, lol.

I think the first part of this drive, along with the roads in and around Julian are some of the best.

John,

A favorite loop of mine to get to Julian and back is:
8 E
79 N
Engineer's Road (turns into Eagle's Peak and spits you back out onto the 78 1 mile west of Julian)
Rest in Julian
Wynola Road (loops back onto the 78)
Old Julian Hwy (takes you into Ramona, from here, you can go to Wildcat Canyon and get back to El Cajon where I live or head towards Highland Valley to the 15)

This drive gives a little bit of everything. Engineer's Road is an unmarked 1 1/2 lane road. It is one of the most technical drives I've been on with a couple switchbacks. Wynola is a clean and fun road many motorcycles take. Old Julian Hwy is along the same lines as Wynola with gradual turns and esses. We all know about Highland Valley. It's the GMR of San Diego county.

O yea, Palomar is always a good one too.

I have done the engineers road, nice road but it was really heavy traffic when I drove it.

hey guys, were trying to set this up and join you over on G35driver.com

I'm going to try and make it out to this one to do the photography for you guys, i would really love to do it, and mountain run's are just a plus for me. Dont count on me 100% to be the only one with an SLR.

here's a sample of my work so you know what you're gonna get if i come along.
