What are some great spots to check out in the LA area? Is the pacific coast highway pretty cool for getting a great view of the ocean? What are the best beaches for swimming?

Yeah PCH is a great spot to see the ocean. You can check out hollywood too. I really don't think Hollywood is all that special but I guess it would be cool to see if you havn't been there before. What days are you gonna be in L.A.

take pacific coast highway/hwy 1 and drive up from long beach to malibu.. especially on a weekend. you're bound to see as many exotics as your heart desires, plus it's a beautiful drive.
if you're here on a sunday, check out supercar sunday
http://supercarsunday.com/
come to hollywood and watch a movie at the arclight theatre. make sure to come early enough to have dinner at their restaurant, too. best fries ever.
check out hollywood and highland, and that whole strip of hollywood blvd. everything "hollywood" is there... grauman's chinese theatre...el capitan.. kodak theatre.. the stars.. ripley's believe it or not.. plus all the fake "designer" crap you'd ever want
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Blvd
http://hollywoodandhighland.com/
not even for the shopping, but for the insane architecture.
yeah it's kind of touristy crap but hey, even the locals enjoy a day of walking around there.... street performers, etc.
check out third street promenade in santa monica.
for a more 'local's' destination, go to old town pasadena. i dont know if you're into museums, but the norton simon museum there is beautiful.
in fact, if you ARE into museums, MAKE SURE TO GO TO THE GETTY CENTER. it's free, just $5 or something for parking. it's ****ing amazing.
and if you're REALLY into museums, go to the OLD getty villa, in malibu. even more ****ing amazing.
if you've got a good car, rental or otherwise, hit some twisties. either in the malibu/santa monica hills, or angeles crest. you'll love it, trust me.

perfect time for hollywood bowl. check out their summer concert series. a few $ for parking, $5 or $10 tickets for nosebleed seats [if you're going for a concert you really don't need to sit any closer].. pack a picnic basket [alcohol IS allowed!] and enjoy the music under the stars. definitely take a girl.. or some friends. http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/calendar/calendar.cfm

Don't forget the Huntington Library if you are in Pasadena. (No its not a library).
I would also suggest picking up a newspaper and finding some independent films. They are hit or miss, but unique to the area.
Agree on Wicked, Hollywood Bowl, etc.
I would not miss some Korean Bar-B-Que in K-town. I would recommend the pace on the corner of Western and Connecticut. Look for the big black on yellow sign in all Korean. Parking is valet in the back. You can't miss it. It is a younger crowd--mostly all Korean. It's pronounced MU-DUNG-SAN.
