taking my mom in law and wife to check out LA this weekend, my experience in LA is limited, since i alwasy stayed with a relative before.
we are looking to book hotels, but i have no idea what neighborhoods are good, other than pasadena is safe because thats where i stayed at before.
so..reqiurements:
1. safe neiborhood, even at night
2. not too far from universal studios (less than 30 mins driving in normal traffic)
thats it
any suggestions please let me know...

we arent looking for something super fancy, under 100 bucks a night a room from hotels.com is fine, we dont mind a slight drive...
but the main thing is, looking at hte listings, i hvae no idea what neiborhood to choose, like is thousand oaks good? i know downtown isnt great, or ontario? hows that etc etc..
like if you can list a few safe locations, that owuld be best, my wife and her mom is driving down by themselves on thurdsay night, so i wanna make sure they dont go wondering into a bad neighborhood

I'd stay in Pasadena or try Northridge. The hotel at Universal is the Sherton Universal. AAA rates are not bad, but over $100 for sure.
Ontario is becoming industrial and about 1 hour from the studios.
Studio City hotels are not cheap and kind of seedy. Woodland Hills and Thousand Oaks are nice. You might find a holiday inn or a hampton inn for a decent price. I would be open on that kind of thing.
South Central is the only real danget zone....too many yacht clubs and martini bars.

South Central has nice areas, all around USC. Just stay near USC!!!. Avoid eye contact. Avoid looking around like you are a tourist. Avoid walking the streets at night. Other than that enjoy the time in SC.

koreatown... besides the POS car alarms, old korean ppl driving, old mexican ppl driving, and crap roads, it's not that bad. Oh, and if your looking for a good hotel, some of the hotels there have some "great" hospitality.
there's a hilton in glendale, check that out. not far from universal studios.
burbank
pasadena
west hollywood
hollywood in general.. there's a best western on franklin that's got the best diner in town. if you stay west of western you should be fine.. you sound super concerned about "safety" so i wouldn't stray too far east if i were you, the bums might scare you.
downtown's not that bad, just don't accidentally wander into skid row. downtown's going through a bit of a renaissance period.. nightlife is getting good, great clubs and bars and late-night dining. there are GREAT hotels in downtown.. from hip boutique hotels like the standard to world-famous, historic, movie-set hotels like the millenium biltmore, the bonaventure, and wilshire grand.
good luck.. hope you enjoy your stay here

Santa Monica, West-LA, Beverly Hills, Brentwood or Westwood -all safe (safest areas in metro LA) and all within 30 minute drive to Hollywood. It's that simple
And all these areas have great areas to walk around/shop/dine, safe at night, etc.
