Yes TPD are by far one of the worst when it comes to modified vehicles. They had my vehicle impounded for street racing when I wasn't even racing! Be careful out there guys and I would just avoid Crossroads at all costs, too many young kids with no sense of responsibility or safety out there!

They would give you a ticket requiring you to remove the test pipes, replace them with the stock equipment and report to a Smog Ref site such as the one at El Camino college.

If you do not concur, you will either have to take your car out of registry (not able to drive on public roads) or they will issue a warrant for your arrest.

Having just test pipes, I wouldn't even be concerned since they are so easy to take on and off and the fine from what I remember is quite small.

You're quite welcome.

I only had to pay the court about $40 but that was in my scenario and in a different county. I am not sure if different counties have different rules. The thing is is that CARB-illegal equipment can range from a CAI to a turbo system and I don't think that the law can increase the fine based on the modification. A CARB-illegal system is still a CARB-illegal system.

Even after I had the whole entire hellish scenario done with, there was still one last reminder the state gave me: When I got my papers in the mail to renew my registration, I looked at the line item charges and fees. There was one extra one that I didn't see in years prior- "Smog Abatement Fee".

At that time I didn't know the definition of abatement so I looked it up and it had to do something about making a purposeful change to aggravate or damage.

The fee was only $12 but it was a small reminder of how Cali is about this stuff.

Despite this, I followed my heart and the beast is back. If I have to comply, so do all these smoke puffing diesels and heavy transportation (government) vehicles as well. No picking on just us little guys.

Hell, there isn't even any proof that global warming is due to carbon emissions....so I am still boosting.

You are correct. I contacted Modified and spoke with the Chief Editor and they included my situation in one of their magazines.

I look forward to meeting you. When are you coming back?

I'm a little confused as never having a ref ticket *knock on wood.* What is the protocol exactly? Police pull you over and check out your mods and then issue you a ticket to go to a smog place? Can you go to any smog shop or does it have to be a special place? Also, do the police just decide who gets a ticket or is there some sort of due process to it on site?

This is interesting. . .

I have 'heard' stories of police still issuing tickets despite people being able to provide proof that a particular piece of equipment is CARB-legal. I believe that they can still send you to a state ref where THEY will determine if it actually is and if so, you have to pay about $15 (IIRC) for the test but oyu get to keep your mod if it is actually CARB legal.

From what I was told, if your car is in your driveway or garage, it needs to have a warrant to be searched but if it is in a public domain, it can be searched. Cops just asked to search as a courtesy.

When you get a Smog Ref ticket, you CAN NOT go to just any mom ' n pop smog shop. You have to go to a government run and funded Smog Ref facility which are usually in community colleges. There is absolutely NO WAY to bribe these folks as they are contracted by the state government.
