Car Cut In Half, Driver Killed In High Speed Crash

LOS ANGELES A motorist died Friday morning when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a power pole in Baldwin Village, according to authorities. The man was speeding and the car split in half upon hitting the pole.

The accident took place on La Cienega Boulevard near Rodeo Road at 1:35 a.m. according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver was traveling north on La Cienega when he hit a pole on the east side of the road., Sgt. John Cudworth of the Los Angeles Police Department's South Traffic Division told a camera crew.

The car was traveling so fast the the impact caused the car to split in half, with one section sliding another 200 feet down the road before coming to a stop, Cudworth said.

While his identity was not immediately released, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Cudworth added.

The victim's friend, who was apparently traveling behind him, witnessed the accident and talked to police during the investigation, he said, adding that it was unclear whether alcohol was a factor.
