It's ghetto in downtown, unless you're paying big bucks for the ritzy hotels. I suggest staying 10-15mins away in the suburbs like Glendale, Burbank, or Pasadena. Lotta places to eat, and less than 20mins away from tons of places to see.

Another choice for Pasadena is the Saga Motor Motel. It's a throwback to another era, and last I looked, very well maintained:

I'm from Norcal but used to go to E3 every year. Our company used to stay at the Wilshire Grand which is within waking distance. They have their own indoor garage though I don't recall how it was set up.
I guess I'll be seeing a lot of other out of town guests downtown as well. Great idea, I was thinking of doing the same with my team, except we're local but have about an hour and a half commute so we're planning on just staying the night nearby since we have to leave the cars overnight.

Any of the following will put you 1 mile from the convention center. All of them are upper class hotels for the area. You dont want to stay in a Motel 6 or alike since South Central L.A. is 1 block east, west, north and south of the convention center. You wont get shot, but you may not like the people! PM me if you need more info!
