Default mountain bikes.... no gas needed!!

planning to get a mountain bike. with the gas prices now id rather go get a bike rather than another car or anything that consumes gas. my work is less than 10 miles. just need advise on which one to get. should i go dual suspension or hard tail? which maker to go with? this would be use for both street and some off roading time too. thanks

you might want to check out local pawn shops. I was coming out of a grocery store about 2 years back and saw a bunch of bikes outside of a pawn shop...went to check them out and the guy said they have more inside.

at first i was freaking out on their prices...they had walmart brand huffy's for crazy high prices then i walk up to a 1000 mongoose full suspension mountain bike. 2001 model for only $79 bucks. I haggled down to 49.99 and made out like a bandit!

I use the bike every now and then but mostly for when a friend wants to go mtn biking we have another steed ready to ride..

no walmart or kmart mb..... i was looking at trekk mountain bikes. it looks like they make good mountain bikes. just wanted to get some inputs on people who has experience with either dual suspension and hard tails. the ups and down of each set up and which brand or make they would recommend.

if your using to commute, why are you getting a mtn bike? Why not a road bike, or hybrid?

To be completely honest, you can go to Dick's Sporting goods or something and get something decent for a few hundred bucks. I started with a cheap Mongoose Full Suspension bike; then up graded to a GT Front Suspension to a GT Full Suspension, and then to mike current bike... My Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp.

Why don't you check out the bike buyers guide on www.mountainbike.com or they will show the best bang for the buck in all the different categories, http://www.bicycling.com/channel/0,6...-0-0-0,00.html hardtail, full suspension, racing ect...... American bikes (Trek & Specialized) really suck. Just read the buyers guide & you will see the will give you reviews from professional racers and tenured biking enthusiasts.

initial post at top..... to work and some off roading too....... i don't think those skinny road bikes would last on the mountain sides.
