Just twice? You should have given it more chance. I personally don't like dirt kicking up on my face and having to avoid rocks. I like hearing my roadbike's wheels whistling while carving up the canyons.

Dudes - My bike is up for grabs! I decided to go a size smaller. Thanks!

Avid cyclist here too! I usually ride solo or in smaller groups (LA Tri Club or Pasadena Tri Club). I quite enjoy competing in duathlons and time trials too.
Here are two of my rides:

Cyclist for about 1yr now here... bought a used Specialized Allez last November. Loove it, I try to ride whenever I can on the weekends. Also on my fluid trainer during the week and on bad weather days.
Here's a good site for some pretty good rides in LA: http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/cycling/rides.html

Wow. I haven't been following the thread... Let's organize a ride. I've been off my bike compared to the summer but I expect I could do 30 - 40 miles at roughly 15 - 20 mph. I normally ride from home (PCH and Clark in LB) to Newport Bch and back. Maybe we come up with something that suits both the advanced and beginners... focus more on social instead of all out riding...
I had a problem develop, after riding, some kind of tendonitis flare up... but I got fitted and a longer crank and seems to have taken care of it.
Here's my Trek Madone 5.1
