Default ARGH!!! Got into an accident on Sunday...

*sigh* my baby is no longer as pristine as she used to be... was getting onto the freeway onramp last nite around 11:30 p.m... basically dark and no traffic. getting onto the 10 West on Rosemead Blvd. the onramp curves to the right (blind turn) just before you merge onto the freeway... going about 25-30 miles an hour... make the turn and there's a honda CRV at a dead stop in front of me, no hazards, nothing... slam on my brakes but unfortunately it wasn't enough... since my car's naturally lower, my front end goes under his bumper. top part of my bumper is shredded and my hood is bent in half... the marks on my car show that I only went about 12 inches under his car but apparently that's enough. no one was hurt (unless the guy changes his story) and my airbags didn't go off (either from height of impact or lower speed). after the accident, I get out and ask if the other guy's okay and he is... but he still doesn't move his car off the freeway (it's a one lane onramp so there was nowhere I could go but straight into him) and I have to tell him about 4 million times that we need to move off the freeway (doesn't speak english very well). the van behind me pulls onto the shoulder to pass us up, asks if I'm okay and then heads onto the freeway while yelling at the guy in front of me for being stopped in the middle of the road (should have asked him to stop and be a witness but he was gone)... surprisingly, within 5 minutes, three of his friends show up although he doesn't even have a cell phone... I try to ask him why he's stopped in the middle of the onramp and he says something about waiting to merge (although his story keeps changing as he talks to his friends in chinese... goes from waiting to merge to... there was a car in the way... to I wasn't stopped)... then he asks me if I want to just give him money to make him go away... respectfully, I decline... no visible damage to his car except maybe a loose muffler... the exhaust isn't even dented... no marks on his bumper... nothing. my car on the other hand... well, let's just say... "ouch!!!" from looking under the new vents in my L-shaped hood... the engine doesn't even look like it was touched the only real damage seems to be to the radiator and the fans... and some body damage where the connection points on the bumper were torn or ripped through... but that's just from eyeballing it at night. all in all, no one really needs this kind of headache but I'm glad no one was hurt... it could have been worse and while I love my car... it is only a car. God willing, my insurance adjuster will see that being stopped on a freeway onramp at night, without hazards, after a blind turn in a one lane highway is creating an unreasonable hazard and that based on the short travel impact on my car and the lack of airbag deployment, I was travelling at low speeds and there was really no reasonable way that I could have avoided this accident. *sigh*

Hey,
THAT SUCKS!! I am ALL TOO FAMILIAR with those 10 Freeway on-ramps in the SG Valley - they have got to be the most dangerous things ever - you are basically coming off a 10 mph turn and have to accelerate to freeway speed in 30 feet - not many cars can do that, so people just freak out, come to a complete stop (which you are never supposed to do), and wait for a clean break to merge.

I'm glad you're ok.... Does that guy have insurance? He sounds like one of those fobs in Monterey Park/Alhambra - maybe he was waiting for somebody to hit him to get free $. Haha, don't mind me, I'm just being callous.

Damn dude, I'm so sorry....

bro sorry about the accident... however driving in SGV at nite is scary you have a bunch of folks FOP (Fresh off the plane) trying to drive in California.

It's not a winning situation... Good luck with you insurance claim.

It might be an excuse to get a kit

thanks, man... I'm doing my best to really not get too worked up about it... to just be grateful that no one was hurt and to roll with the punches that life throws me... everything happens for a reason, right? it just doesn't always happen to be a "good" reason. *wipes away tears and tries to smile*

Sorry to hear about your accident. Make sure you document as much as possible about what happened. I was involved in a "staged" accident almost ten years ago, where four young kids from the SGV pulled in front of me and hit the brakes on the 10W to 405S onramp. They insisted on a police report at the time, and I even let them use my cell phone to call when it took a while for CHP to show up after I called.

There was no visible damage to their early-80s Escort other than a couple of scratches, and it took only about $80 to fix my truck, but their attourney contacted my insurance company shortly thereafter with stories of neck/back injuries and damage estimates that would have paid for their car several times over. Luckily for me, upon my insistence that there was no possible way that the occupants were injured, and after interviewing me and them, Allstate believed my version of what happened, and rejected their claims completely. I'd even saved the damaged part from my truck (the plastic grill) for them to photograph. The Allstate investigator was also familiar with their doctor and attourney from previous accidents.

In the mean time, the DMV was after me to fill out their form for accidents with X amount of damage and/or injuries. I refused, since the dollar amount to repair both cars was under their threshold and since there were no injuries reported at the scene. They threatened to suspend my license until eventually they sent me a form that just stated that I was in the accident (no damage/injury commitment).

It all worked out in the end, but I learned that I needed to have an active role to make the system work for me.

Sorry to hear about your accident, but we're glad that you're OK. In cases such as yours - where the other party keeps changing their story - it is really helpful to get a witness. Write down then and there what he/she saw and have him/her sign the document with contact information. I can't stress it enough, but we all should have a camera (even a cheap, disposable one) in our cars.

Like bobowah said... I smell KIT.

Anyways, keep us posted.

DAMN!!! the only local Zer i havent met and now his car is hurt.
at least if they keep changing their story theyll probably mess up and contradict themselves when the report is taken from them.
in which case its your word or no word. Claim takers are tricky to theyll try to trip them up. They tried to get me to say i was speeding i told them the only way i was speeding was if my brand new cars speedometer was off.

thanks for the support guys... I don't know if it was a scam or not, but did find the circumstances to be pretty "odd"... I'll keep everyone posted... wow, I think the big wheel of bad luck just likes to roll over me now and again and again and again...

Dude, that totally sucks. The bad thing about this is the witness part. You are in the wrong right now cuz you don't have a witness and no one can prove that he was just sitting there without hazards unless the other guy says he didn't have his hazards on. Good luck bro and I hope everything turns out well.

Man, sorry to hear about your accidents. There are a lot of drivers that doesn't know what to do when they have to merge on such a short distance. This sounds fishy though when suddenly that guys friends show up. Hope everything turns out for the best.

Dude, sorry to hear about the accident. I totally understand how you feel, its nauseating. Been there, but all I know is things can be a lot worse. It's just a pain in the ***, but your car will be back into perfect shape before you know it. In the past, anytime i've had major body repair work done for any reason, I added a new part (Bodykit, etc.) to make me feel better. So maybe its time for a aftermarket front kit and/or hood? Maybe talk the bodyshop into doing it.

I had a small incident this morning that has depressed me alot. Upon leaving my garage I accidently crushed a small turtle that was hanging out outside. I actually *cringe* heard the loud crunch sound as my windows were down when it happened. It was still alive, half crushed in and bleeding, barely crawling and probably in great pain. It tore me apart as i'm a animal lover (especially reptiles & amphibians). If I had not ran him over and just spotted him, i would have probably kept him ... I even had a spare terranium that my iguana grew out of.

If there was any chance of saving the poor guy I would have rushed him to a vet, but it wasn't going to make it. I took it out of its misery and gave it a burial. Poor little guy *sniff*

Damn, you trying to make me cry at work? What was a turtle doing walking around by your house? Did it get loose from someone or was it wild?

Back to the car. I agree with everyone. You said everything happens for a reason. I believe that. When I bought my car, it had a messed up bumper. I was pretty down that my new car was messed up. So when I got it repainted, I took off the logo. That is something I never would have done if my bumper wasn't already messed up. Now since you have to replace you stock bumper, go with a kit. Maybe that will turn this bad situation into a good one.

A turtle hanging out on the road??? WTF?
Dude zxsaint that sucks. I felt so bad when my friend and I ran over a skunk in college. The only things I don't feel sorry for when I see roadkill are pigeons (I usually just think, How the hell did that happen? Damn things are so stupid, just FLY!)

Sorry mastakilla didn't mean to hijack the thread with my sad story... Just had to let it out.

Iris/OC_350Z> I have a garage behind the house facing an alleyway. It was crawling outside across my garage door and it was just in the wrong place/wrong time. It may have been a young pet turtle that got away, generally they're known to run away if they're not fed or are otherwise unhappy.
