Angeles Crest at night??

Ok so here's what happened. The road was a little wet but we were driving at a pretty conservative speed. What the problem was is that there are HUGE rocks all over the road. Unfortunately my cousin in his EvoX hit a rock dead on with his rim and fractured his rim.(causing blown tire)
We started on the side that leads off from the 15 (on the way to Vegas) and yeah the highway was closed only a couple miles in, so i believe Naeiri is right.
Naeiri, how is the road that starts from your side? Is it driveable or is there HUGE rocks all over it also?

well when it rains no matter how often the city cleans it up (which is pretty often, actually) there WILL be rocks.. it's a matter of simple science/gravity. it rains, water loosens dirt, rocks come tumbling down. i avoid all canyons when they're wet.. it's just a bad idea.
in general though, when the weather is good, it's a REALLY good road (if you stay on the main highway). very well maintained, usually very, very clean.

man, that would have been a very very bad idea! just imagine the flame you would have gotten when you returned here talking about sliding into a guard rail or into a tree...
glad the rain damage stopped you guys. dont sound like a good idea to those first timers considering a RAINING NIGHT DRIVE on the crest

Just remember if you're going straight up to the cafe on top (I forgot the name since it's been a while since I went up ther on the crotch rosket), all the turns arn't that bad, except this one uphill left-hander. Everything is probably a 40mph turn in a car... but this one bad boy is a 20-25 mph curve. Sneak up on you, this is about half way up I'd say.
It's fun... just becareful. Going towards 9-mile is a nice run too, but the road gets a bit rough since it's been patched over and over again.

you could, but you seriously would literally have to be trying to hit something. So far the subaru has done well in crappy weather. If I were still in my RX7 I wouldn't do half the things I do in my LGT.

I only drive up canyon roads in late spring - summer. I stay away in winter seasons for good reason, although conditions may not SEEM bad, I'm not will to risk anything.
Other then that, if you're going to make a mistake, make it on a track.

This is the first i've heard of this so excuse the stupid question - but are you guys saying there is a closed off road somewhere that is still more or less maintained that you are free to go drive on??
#35
There IS a closed off section, however it is NOT maintained so you canNOT drive on it. If you want to drive highway 2 the best side to start on would be the L.A. If you start from the San Bernardino side you can only get a few miles of driving before it is blocked off.

the road IS very well maintained up until about halfway to the dead end, because other roads connect to it (like angeles forest highway) and people still drive all the way up to the dead end, park, and go hiking/camping. past a certain point though, the road gets a little bumpy.
