Default Laptop has virus... recommendations?

My gf's laptop got a pretty hardcore virus over the weekend where we cant access the net or any of her programs... i have to take it in somewhere to get fixed. Any good places in the torrance, redondo beach, LA area that are fairly priced and will be quick turnaround? or should i just take it to the Geek squad at Best Buy?

"hardcore" eh?? did you ask her what site was she surfing on? lol...

anyways... you have to wipe everything and start over. some of these trojan horses are crazy hard to get rid of, even with the most updated anti-virus etc etc...

make sure you save everything you want to save on an external, but scan the files first to make sure they are clean or as clean as they can be.

find a friend that knows how to do this... but you have to wipe everything and start over again. it does take some time. it's costly if you go somewhere... i know halfrice on here use to work for the geel squad... you can pm him. i know he does work like this and charges a fraction of what others charge.

I've had luck with rkill followed up with Malwarebites' Anti-Malware.

But you might have to do run these programs in safemode and definitely do a full scan.

If you're not in a rush, you can leave the laptop with me for a week or so and I should be able to take care of it for you if you don't want to spend any money. You did buy some stuff from my stereo shop over in downtown so I might as well return the favor.

Rommy is on drugs, he will sell it to buy more. Don't believe him.

Just sell it on craigslist in the casual encounters section as a 'date'. problem solved.

thanks but no. it's a hog, and I think it was the last update, or the one prior that had a giant memory leak. it is now fixed, but FF still sucks.

Don't do this. There is no way of knowing that your machine needs to be entirely re-imaged just by the brief description of problems that you provided. It really goes beyond just saving your important documents to an external device (which by the away, if you do in fact have a virus, it is thus going to transfer over to the device in which you save it to as well). While what you are experiencing could also in fact be an Operating System issue (whether it be XP or Vista), a simple repair might just do the trick. This can be done by obtaining a recovery disk, or by doing a recovery via your anti-virus software (assuming that you have one?) If you don't, I would recommend McAfee or Symmantic (Norton). Below, I have listed issues that you may experience if you did in fact have a virus on your machine:

-Deleted files.
-Various messages in files or on programs.
-Changes volume label.
-Marks clusters as bad in the FAT.
-Randomly overwrites sectors on the hard disk.
-Replaces the MBR with own code.
-Create more than one partition.
-Attempts to access the hard disk drive, which can result in error messages such as: Invalid drive specification.
-Causes cross-linked files.
-Causes a "sector not found" error.
-Cause the system to run slow.
-Logical partitions created, partitions decrease in size.
-A directory may be displayed as garbage.
-Directory order may be modified so files, such as COM files, will start at the beginning of the directory.
-Cause Hardware problems such as keyboard keys not working, printer issues, modem issues etc.
-Disable ports such as LPT or COM ports.
-Caused keyboard keys to be remapped.
-Alter the system time / date.
-Cause system to hang or freeze randomly.
-Cause activity on HDD or FDD randomly.
-Increase file size.
-Increase or decrease memory size.
-Randomly change file or memory size.
-Extended boot times.
-Increase disk access times.
-Cause computer to make strange noises, make music, clicking noises or beeps.
-Display pictures randomly.
-Different and/or undocumented types of error messages.

Non of these are causing your issues, which leads me to believe that it could also be a hardware issue. In a nutshell, it is absolutely impossible to tell without looking at the machine itself. My best advice to you is to make a small investement and purchase a good and legitimate Anti-Virus software, run a scan, then a fix/repair, reboot your machine and go from there. You are going to have to troubleshoot one step at a time. If you take it in to the "geek squad", they are going to rape you by charging you for what you can do yourself. Re-image your machine as a last resort... You are going to lose precious software thats going to cost you more than your machine is worth, unless you have obtained licensed backup copies. Hope all works out well, and let us know how it goes.
