Just wondeing how you would compare San Diego to the San Francisco Bay Area. Looking for differences, pros, and cons. Thanks in advance!

Are you planning on moving down?

I've never lived in San Diego before so I have not much to say about SD but I've lived in SF before.

The City itself is relatively small so it takes only a few to get to anywhere. Also, food is generally good in San Francisco compared to other cities. Great Chinese, Italian and French food.

But just like any other metropolitan cities, SF has its own issues. I think SF is one of the cities with huge homeless issues. I remember smelling a homeless person on every corner on every street in downtown.

We have the same amount of traffic, depending on which hwy you take. We dont really have bridges so I guess grid lock on the Bay Bridge or GG Bridge would be one of the cons. Also, I noticed people generally drive slower in North then South. Driving on those steep hills could be interesting with 6spd mannys.

BTW, where do you go riding in your Z in SF? No canyons.... that would come on top of my list of the cons.

One minor note.... I spent some of the coldest summers there. The beaches are extremely cold (i.e., Ocean Beach). I'm sure beached in San Diego will be reasonably warmer.

 

I grew up in San Diego, and live here now, but I went to college and lived in SF for 7 years. Keep in mind I have been in San Diego for the last 14 years, so SF has changed, but in general:


In SF, there are more resturants than you can imagine, and almost no bad ones. The competition is to stiff. San Diego has some good resturants, but they are spread out.

Musems and the arts are first rate in SF, and third rate at best in San Diego. San Diego beaches are far superior to SF.

If you live in the city, you don't need a car in SF. Public transport is first rate, clean and convenient. In San Diego you need a car to go anywhere, and traffic is getting worse by the week.

Housing costs are bad in San Diego, they are outragous in the Bay area.

Policitally I was considered conservative in SF, and in San Diego, I am considered liberal.

It gets cold in SF in the summers and the winters, but fall and spring are awesome. Weather in San Diego is 90% good and 10% OK, it is never really bad.

Alang, any good yet affordable places to live in North SD? Around Rancho Bernardo area.
I got a price shock when I checked web prices. I know traffic stinks.

 

Thanks for the info guys. Nothing is set in stone yet but things are moving along for me.

In general what's the local opinion on the public school system in SD? Are there any neighborhoods known for exceptionally good schools?

Lastly are there any tracks closer than Willow Springs and Buttonillow? I saw a web site for the SD Speedway but I thought this was purely an oval without a road section.

My Bro & Sis In Law (Navy) will be moving there in September, so i will be driving down occassionally... SD is awesome, but i love the BAY too much....

I've never tried those places... hmmm... I should remember those places, just in case I move back up there again. Nothings set yet but there is a slight chance that I may move to Silicon Valley area in a couple of years.

There are no more "affordable" housing prices in SD!

 

Yeah... I used to live up in Millbrae before and had many friends down in San Jo. SV is awesome but man... housing is going to be outrageous if I do decide to transfer to our SV office. We'll see... if I don't go this year, the possiblity will always linger for the next two years b/c they are in dire need of help.
