Default MN Spring Track Day at BIR

Hey guys -
Dave (SmoothZ) and I were talking the other day about possibly doing a track day at BIR (Brainerd International Raceway) sometime this spring. This was an idea that Dave had brought the idea up last year as well. I was planning on going up last year but things didn't work out due to the new baby and all. With that said I am going to register for one of the dates in May or June. I'm wondering if anyone else would be interested. It might be kind of cool to get a bunch of Z guys together at the same time. Below is a description. I think it would be a blast if we got a group of people together for it.

Do you currently own a performance sedan or sports car, and want to feel its full potential outside the confines of city driving?

That's why we created the BIR Performance Driving Experience!

Here, you'll take your driving into an entirely new dimension, with nothing to hold you back.

Join other automotive enthusiasts in Minnesota's premier performance driving program. Everything about the BIR experience is designed for you, the discriminating driver with an interest in great cars and their on-track performance.

You'll begin with classroom instruction to familiarize you with the track as well as safety information and High Performance Driving Techniques. Then it's drive time! If this is your first time at our school, one of our instructors will take you on the track to show you how to safely get the most out of your car. The rest is up to you. Sharpen your own driving skills. Instructors are always available to help you, if needed, throughout the day.

Accelerating, cornering and braking. Put your car through it's performance paces. Track sessions run throughout the day, so you'll have plenty of drive time. Enjoy the excitement of on-track performance driving!

Here is a link to the website:
http://www.birperformance.com/viewpage.aspx?ID=63
The cost of the event is $265 if you use your own car. Also includes lunch

Anyway, let me know if anyone is intersted. I would like to do something the end of May or the first part of June.

June would be better. If I can get the end of May off, I'd like to try and go to Zdayz.

June works for me. It looks like they have the 8th or the 15th available.

If we go in June, I will probably bring the family and stay here: http://www.lodgehotelsbrainerd.com/

My youngest son loves fast cars, so I think it would be awesome for him to spend some time at the track and check out all the cars. Plus, Tara and the kids have never been to Brainerd, and I have.

I think maybe we should pick a date and then start planning for it.

Whoever is going should bring a video camera for in-car shots. Also, start looking for helmets if you don't already have one. I have a new one that's never been used even though it's a few years old.

so would a person have to pay the $265 everytime they go to this "event" or is there a way to get "certified" and the next time you come back you can skip the whole class session and what not?

That would be something that we should ask if and when we go. The more people that go, the more serious the question.

What we are looking to do is the performance driving school. Like any school I would think the $265 goes to cover instructor time, track time and various other costs involved with putting on the class. I know they host other more advanced racing classes. With that said I imagine if they have any open race days they maybe they would allow you to attend this for a reduced fee since there wouldn't be any class associated with it. Based on their rate schedule this class is somewhat of an entry level class and would be the cheapest of the classes. If you go back for the more advanced racing sessions with the spec racers then the price goes up pretty quick. I know that sometimes they have hosted group events in the past. I think the guy that Dave was taking to last year went with the Twin Cities Porsche club. I have to believe that this would be pretty expensive though unless you can get quite a few people to commit.

The 'class' is usually during a weekday. Weekends are reserved for larger spectator events.

So Monday, eh? That's not too bad. I could go up there on a Sunday with the family, spend the night at that cool resort or lodge, then play on Monday before coming back. Conall's birthday is on the 17th. I wonder what other cool things are up in Brainerd.

Dave - I think they have a few fun water parks there in addition to the resorts.

I'm on board. If the 15th works for everyone then I say we see who all wants to go and then get this scheduled up by the end of March at the latest (just to ensure we all get a space).

Here, I'll start a list: June 15th - BIR
1. Dave
2. Andrew
3. Ben

Sweet. Sounds like a plan to me. I'm going to start looking for accommodations and reserve something for that weekend.
