Default Question for Houston and Dallas members

At the end of the year I'm moving back down south to my birth State and I would like to know the pluses and the minuses of each city. Don't hold back. I just want honest opinions on how you feel about your city. When I was little we used to live in Richardson,Dallas and Oakcliff(sp?) before we moved back to New Orleans. I like Dallas, I've been back a few times to visits friends but I don't remember anything about Richardson and Oakcliff is the hood right? My cousins say I should move to Houston where they're at. They say it's like New Orleans but it's way bigger. I want to be closer to my family but not that close. I want to start scoping out some areas to live also. What are some decent areas that aren't ghetto? I'll probably be looking to spend no more than about 222K or so. One last thing- The thing I'm going to miss most about being up here is that you can roll out in the sticks and mountains and have nice fun challenging rides in your car or on your bike. Anything close to this down here?(Well I know not the mountains) Thanks.

"They say it's like New Orleans but it's way bigger."

Interesting comment. In what way is it like New Orleans? Weather? Kinda'.
Partying? Not really. Food? "Fraid not. Flooding? Not as bad. Music? Not as much.

I live in the Heights (inside the loop). Mighty convenient to downtown but has gotten pricey. 222K would get you in. You'll get lots more house way out but the driving sucks.

Fun driving? Got to go about 60 miles NW to get curvy roads and little hills.

Have only visited Dallas over the years. Not that impressed.

Everybody I talked to from New Orleans that goes there say that. Maybe they stick to the same kind of neighborhoods they lived in while in New Orleans. I know I'm going to have to take a trip down there. Hopefully late summer/early fall I'll make it down and explore for myself. I'm about 34 miles away from D.C. and 25 away from work so a commute wouldn't really bother me that much.

born and raised in Htown until I was 18. I still go back all the time. If you dont live in the city, you will do ALOT of driving, and as long as you stay off the roads during rush hours, you'll be fine.

Restaurants? I think Houston has a good selection of food joints...just not the best.

You cant beat the cheap real estate outside the city. It's dirt cheap compared to the rest of the country.

Also, most of the Houston 'burbs have some GREAT middle and high schools...so if you have kids it's a good place for public schools.

Houston like New Orleans..... not really.

I've been to New Orleans several times and have lived in Houston for about 10 years. Houston is alot cleaner... no offense to NO peeps. As for weather, HUMID, comparable to NO. Food, more variety, more franchise restaurants, more upscale restaurants in terms of numbers. Shopping, more variety again nothing in NO compares to the Galleria. Partying, no as great. Some nice clubs but nothing like Bourbon street partying. Granted I know the french quarter is mostly tourists. As far as tourism, not much in terms of attractions or sights. Now the tricky part, where to live. For the money you are talking about there are some options, it all depends on what part of town you work and what part of town you wanna live on. There is downtown, being highly redeveloped to cater to dare isa "yuppies", young professionals looking for convenience and trendy for the price you were talking about it maybe out of your price range. Surrounding area also being developed w/ townhomes, nice and in your price range. Inner loop (inside 610 loop), depending which side. towards the west you've got the Washington/Heights/ Rice Military area, you've townhomes again around the price you are looking. There is also River Oaks, definately out of the 222K range, more like 2mil range. South inner loop you've got the Medical center if you are in the medical field this is great. Townhomes/Condos, Rice Village homes maybe out of the price range, half million dollar homes easily. Outside the loop is wide open. West is Katy suburbs, North is Woodlands/Jersey Village. South is Pearland. Southwest is Sugarland. Traffic is a BIOTCH during rush hours on all major freeways (I-10, I-45, US-59). Hopes this helps dude. Good luck

Default North Dallas

I am from Coppell and love it. You have the yuppy young just married types and also the very rich.

It is a very nice area and very centrally located to the airport, malls, etc.

Coppell is in my opinion the best place to live.

The weather is usually great and never as humid as Houston. We also
have everything Houston does in Dallas and more. Remember Dallas is
a main hub so you will find plenty to do.

As far as communities go Dallas offers both ends of the spectrum, so there is plenty of community areas both Gay and Straight.

I suggest taking a couple of trips to look around.

Good Luck!
