Default San Antonio, a nice place to live?

Hey guys! I've been lurking in this club for some time and have finally decided to post.

I live outside DC and I'm thinking about moving to SA, do you guys like the town? Any recommendation on where to purchase?

Has anyone lived in another city and moved to SA to take advantage of the housing market?

Any recommendation on hosting/IT/network companies that are hiring?

I want to give this a try, figured I would begin here.

How old are you? Do you have a family? Those are two determining factors in how much you will enjoy SA.

I moved from SA about 2 years ago after living there for about 2 years. Personally I liked SA a lot, there is a lot of nightlife if you are single.
I lived on the NE side of town, if you are looking to buy, shop around on the NW/NE sides of town.

Can't really comment on the family side of things. Also, I am originally from VA, Va beach, and frequented NOVA a lot, It is very different from the DC area and never gets nearly as cold in the winter.

Lots of nightlife? Is your idea of "nightlife" Bennigans?

I moved from SA mostly because there was nothing for the younger crowd. It would be a great place to raise a family though. Its a very conservative town with comparitivley cheap real estate.

San antonio is a good place to stay if your over your 30;s and married. The best place to live IMO is the N or NW side. If money isnt an option looking over near 281 and hilderbrand area. Its nice over there. The car scene is OKAY there but not the greatest. And the nightlife isnt that great. But your only 6hrs away from south padre island...LOL

dude move to Austin if you're 20-ish and want to hit the clubs every night! lot's of "just-out-of-highschool" girls around here....if that's your flavor!

Actually Austin is a nice city if you're a bit liberal (I'm not really). The real estate is a bit more thna other places in TX. Austin is known as "silicon hills" for it being like a mini "silicon valley"...at least before the bust in 2000. We have a decent job market for high-tech stuff...we have alot of big name companies here....Dell, Intel, Applied Materials, tele-com, etc etc.

I'm 29, and newly single. Nightlife is important to me, I've heard about the latinas....lol

Thought about Austin, 4 of my best friends have moved there and are trying to get me to move there. I went to Austin for New Years, and it was off the chain! Homes seem more expensive, but I guess it depends on how close to the city you are.

I'll have to check out Schertz....keep the ideas coming!

Sounds like you want to be in Austin. San Antonio does NOT have a night life.

Dallas would be the next best, IMO, to Austin. Although there a more pretentious attitude here as compared with Austin.

I have lived in SA for over 30 years so I can provide you a good idea of what it's like. Contrary to what everyone else is saying, SA has a nightlife. I know, I have lived it -- as a teenager and while going to college, and even after I started a family. In addition, there are various activities throughout the year -- Fiesta, rodeo, Six Flags, Sea World, Riverwalk, etc. SA is the #1 visited city in Texas by tourists -- yes, entertainment has a lot to do with that. FYI: SA has over 50% hispanic population so your chances of meeting a Latina, as you mentioned, is greater than in Austin, Dallas or Houston.

The cost of living is better than Austin, Dallas & Houston. Traffic is better also. I'm in Austin several times a month so I know how horrible traffic is there (IH35 & MOPAC). Quality of life in SA is much better also, as well as employment opportunities. I am in the IT business so I can relate to you and I can honestly tell you there are plenty of opportunities locally (both in the corporate and DoD sector). SA has four military installations and most of their IT support are contracted out. In addition, NSA is coming to town and they are looking for savvy IT professionals. SA is home to AT&T.

These are just a few of the reasons why I have lived & stayed in SA (actually just north of SA). I had opportunities to moved to other locations (to include DC) but SA has just so much to offer than other cities.

Schertz or Cibolo are both really nice and not too far from Austin, dont worry SA is not that bad.. but it does not compare to Austins nightlife.. Sherlocks, Broadway Bar and Soho are my 3 favs in SA..

I lived in SA from 23-25, I am 26 now... and YES there is indeed nightlife, and I am not talking about Bennigans If you are looking for a college crowd Austin is a quick drive away, straight shot up I35.

I lived there from 4th grade until I was 25. So I know the town really well. If you think there is a night life, great! In comparison to other cities in the US, SA has none in my opinion.

San Antonio nightlife has exploded in the past 10 years or so. Back in 95 0r 96 I used to party at one of three spots. Atrium, Park Place, or Bonham Exchange on Wed. That was pretty much it. Now there are all kinds of spots downtown on the Riverwalk, the medical district has all kinds of spots, up and down 410. Out west off of 281. But forget all that, one word....FIESTA. San Antonio has it's fair share of violence but being the 8th largest city in the country you have to expect that. It can't be beat for its cultural events, it has two major theme parks and it is the only city that somehow figured out that the population would GROW and was ready for the explosion with not one but two loops. I have lived in Austin and currently live in dallas and been to Houston a bunch, TOO MUCH TRAFFIC. Schertz is a great place to live as its away from the big city but close enough to party, (I do, my sister lives there) also if you really want quiet country living, try Boerne. It is beautiful. When you decide to settle down, your kids can go to the greatest highschool ever, Judson. The list of pros goes on and on.....

That's not unusual . . . I know quite a few people who lived in SA and commuted to Austin also. Depending on where you live/work, it is at least 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour drive. If you want the best of both worlds, you can live either in New Braunfels or San Marcos. These towns are between Austin & San Antonio on IH35. San Marcos is a college town and definitely has a night life (during the school year). New Braunfels doesn't have quite a night life but is booming during the summer months (Canyon Lake, Guadalupe River, Schlitterbahn Park, etc). Cibolo, Schertz, Selma are communities just north of SA and a great place to live (single or married). New subdivisions are booming in this area and very affordable.

MY RECOMMENDATION: Live in Austin, Dallas or Houston -- that's one less Z in the SA area -- I want Zs to be rare in SA! Just kidding, of course.
