Since no matter what I am going to be building and gutting this car probably, I am looking to go with an 04 since you can pick them up dirt cheap.

Go with the '03s with all the recalls and TSBs fixed. Plus, '03s are the fastest. ![Wink](https://my350z.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Here's my real order of preference:
1. HR (07-08) - most N/A and FI potential, fastest out of the box, least amount of BS | most expensive, void warranty, expensive/less mods
2. non-RevUp (03-05, 06 AT) - cheapest, recalls/TSBs are fixable, supposedly the lightest, most/cheapest mods | oldest, less potential, recalls/TSBs
3. RevUp (05 Track & AE, 06 MT) - exhaust timing, more/cheaper mods | oil consumption, less potential

My first goal with it is going to be to beat a couple of the Evo drivers I know on a road course (all of whom have won championships of some sort) so my work will be cut out for me.
The DE does have "less" potential, but it is all about finding the sweet spot where you have the highest amount of horse power possible, with the least amount of waste possible. I am thinking like a porsche engineer now

That is a very rational and well put together list. Honestly I would rather go with the VHR or HR, but due to the economy that is just not within my reach. In a couple of years, maybe, but I have to keep building on my reputation in the mean time, and I believe being able to show my wrenching abilities is one of the best ways to earn the trust of my potential customers. So I will go with an 04, and make it fast again.

Beating an Evo (AWD, similar factory performance #s, factory turbo) on a road course will be challenging enough. A modified Evo will prove to be even more challenging. Championship winners are very difficult to beat in almost all cases.
Any time you're racing against a good driver for any automotive sport, you'll need to devote more seat time than you most likely have. To beat these people who have already stout cars for their respective sport and class will be a Herculean task. Good luck, Stephen.
P.S. - Get your damn car already!

Why 04? If you're getting a 2004 Z, you might as well get the 04.5 or 03. 03 is the same but cheaper. 04.5 will have the minor interior updates and less issues (if not fixed already).

So, is it just me, as always, and maybe Stu going to the drag strip this weekend (Sat or Sun)?
The weather will be cold enough to yield some good numbers. Even if it's your first time, you can potentially run mid 13s N/A on street tires.* Let's see what all your mods did for you and your car. If you don't race, I don't know how you can justify spending money on mods! It's cheap to get in and you get to race as many times as you want whenever you want! Let's go!
*Real life results may vary and are dependent on number of factors present at the time of the race.

I "might" be able too... Depending on how this dealership I am speaking with about an 04 is, I have been waiting all day for the carfax on a car and haven't received it yet. But if it is clean and I work out the deal I want, I could have the car on Friday, don't hold your breath on it though.

Maybe people need an incentive.... Maybe we should hold a small tournament, if enough people show, and the winner would get free PM or dyno (if Stephen can pull that off)?

You've been saying that for weeks and still haven't shown up at the strip. I group you with the rest of the DFW. ![](https://my350z.com/forum/images/smilies/icon22.gif)
