Default Texas Front Plate Requirement???

Got pulled over on 190 in Dallas for 'passing' a police officer - I was going 6 UNDER the limit. Anyway, he just wanted to bother me and wrote me a ticket for not having a front plate.

I have never ever had a front plate before - Ford truck, Maxima, and Z. 10 years and I have never had a problem. Is this really a law? I asked two police officers yesterday and they said it isn't? What is the verdict?

How can I temporarily mount it without drilling into the bumper?

Besides, I have never seen a Corvette with a front plate. Damn po-po

It's technically the law, however, it's only selectively enforced. Most cops don't seem to care, but there are a few out there who like to get someone for any little offense they can.

I refuse to put my front plate on--even if I do get a ticket. Only suggestion I have, if you want to put it on is to get AudioPat's bracket, so at least you won't have to drill holes into your paint.

Is your car riced out by any chance? In Austin, you prob. don't have to worry about it unless your car is riced, in which case it provides a convenient excuse for the cops to pull them over.

I asked the police chief of Addison and he told me a front license plate is a must, but as I understood selectively enforced. I have a front license plate on my car but I didn't dare drill holes in my baby. I bought a Z bracket (accessable at most dealerships, Courtesy Nissan is the cheapest that I found), and it looks smoother than with a normally mounted front license plate... I think.

BTW, install - no matter what anybody tells you is a snap. Dealership tried charging me like $40+-, but decided to do it myself and had no problems.

Get some masking tape and role it into a few small 1/2" diameter circles so its sticky on all sides. Quickly stick your front license plate on with a few circles of tape so the holes face up and down or else the plate's weight might make it too heavy for the tape. Take a photograph of your car with the front plate on. Then take the photo to court and say, you have corrected the offense and they will let you off for around 10 bucks for paper work fees. The ticket will not go on your record.

oh yea, remember to put the screws into the plate or at least Photoshop your pic so it looks like it does anyways. Or take a low res pic from a bit far away so no one is the wiser.

My-O-My,
How creative, the criminal mind...hahahaha

Last time I was at the tax office, I asked about this issue. The lady gave me a flyer that stated, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that YES, a front license plate IS required in the state of Texas.
BUT...
thanks to all these creative minds, there are ways to circumvent this little problem.
Thanks for all the solutions. Some of them border on genius !

I drove my '83 280ZX for 17+yrs without a front plate, and despite NUMEROUS law infractions and face-to-face encounters with the local constabulatories, I never ONCE got a ticket for lack of a front plate....go figure.

Everyone must sign this. Help do away with the defacing of such beautiful cars

BTW, I live in Austin, and a DPS trooper pulled me over for going 5 over the spd limit. He also gave me the "no front license plate" ticket which I have heard so much about. The fine in Travis county is only $10, but with court fees ($50 something) and handling fees ($17 or so) it ends up being like a $75 ticket. My Z is NOT riced out (only minor mods so far), but the cop seemed to be a real d!ck so I think that was his rationale. A co-worker heard something on the radio this morning about TX abolishing the law, so we will see.
