Default DFW G Club Tuning Meet

original thread here http://g35driver.com/forums/dfw-g35-...st-thread.html

Welcome to the DFW G Club TIT (Tuning Interest Thread)

There has been a lot of talk lately about getting a group tune going. I'm trying to consolidate all the information in to one thread.

Tuning is required to get the most out of your performance mods. Through tuning you gain HP/TQ throughout your power band, your engine will run smoother, and even gain gas efficiency (when you are not driving it hard.) Even if you haven't done much to your car, performance can be improved upon by a good tuner. Tuning is not just for cars with a Turbo or Supercharger, there is a lot of power to be gained by tuning a car with just bolt ons. Also, its not just power you are gaining, if you look at before and after dynos you can see how much smoother the engine is running after a tune compared to before. Not to mention all the power under the curve that you gain. Just because your peak numbers don't change much doesn't mean much. With most tunes I've seen you gain massive amounts of power in the mid range which helps immensely during spirited driving.

Enter Steve Kan. We are fortunate enough to have a amazing tuner in the area. To give you an idea of how good he is, people fly him around the US/CAN to do group tunes. This guy has tuned just about everything including a 920 HP Twin Tubo Viper, a 700+ HP GTR, and of course a 600 HP 22PSI E85 Beast of a G35

Steve is opening a new shop in Lewisville in June (open now), and I wanted to break in this shop with a massive group tune of G35s (and 350zs). He normally charges $450 NA / $550 FI for tunes, but has agreed to a tune us for $300 Each! (FI may be more)

now, he can tune just about anything but this was going to be oriented around using Uprev Osiris. I've been in contact with uprev to see what we could do about getting everyone a license for tuning. For this to go through we are basically going to be buying Steves Uprev shop tuning license. For everyone without a uprev license already, you will only have to pay $300 for him to have the ability to tune on your car with this software. So the total is only $600 for tune and license, You will NOT find a cheaper deal on this anywhere, especially for a tuner of this caliber. If you want to have your own cable so you can do datalogging and clearing codes you will need osiris standard which includes the license and the cable and is $500.

Shop location:

This thread was created to gauge interest so I'll start the list. Who, of you, will finally get your tune on?

UPDATE: for this to go through we need at least 7 people who will be purchasing a license through Steve and at least 10 total, The cost on these is $300 a Piece.
At this time I need deposits from everyone who needs a license. We can meet up in person or you can paypal me as a gift. I have to get this before we can get Steve to purchase the Uprev software.

I wil put my name down...but I still have questions....Do we Get any maps ?
What are we allowed to do as far as Rev-limiter settings ? Will we get a base Dyno before it is Tuned so we can see the gains ?

in addition to your primary tuned map you can get simple maps like valet mode and fuel economy included in price, if you want something drastically different you will probably have to pay more.

raising Rev-limiter is be easy to do, wouldn't worry about that.

and Yes you will see what the gains are, that's kind of a minimum requirement for tuning.

just fill up with 91 or 89 instead of 93 and you should be fine.

Thanks SexyRob,

I will be in for it...but I'm still a little confused about the pricing ???

It says "For everyone without a uprev license already, you will only have to pay $300 for him to have the ability to tune on your car with this software. So the total is only $600 for tune and license"

So is it $ 300 or $ 600 Because I don't have a license from Uprev....or do you mean If you want to purchase the license you can buy it for another $ 300.....But then you mention having your own cable to clear codes for $ 500 ???? So I'm not sure what is additional & what you get for it.

if you want to do data logging and code clearing on your own, you can get the osiris standard (which includes license) for $500

if you just want to be able to get tuned you need the $300 license from Uprev

Separately, Steve is charging $300 to do the tune (he normally charges $450)

if you have the License, you can always upgrade later to the Standard version of Osiris and get the cable...

Total including license and tuning will be $600 or $800 depending on which version you get....

Thanks for the clarifying Rob.

BTW....I saw all the stuff you've done on your G over the years....You have way more patience than I do....After your Z got squashed by that truck I would have moved onto something else. I like what you did to get her back !

I think it's a different blend of gas completely though since CA has different emissions. I'm not certain though.

Stu...I don't think you'll find anything over 91 octane in CA....So What ever the Car's manual recommends...then I would follow it.

I like the second web site the best.

Here are some good sites to read up on it:

No, I know the octanes. 91 is what I would use in CA, 93 here. The issue lies with not the octane but the additives they may or may not use differently in CA. Maybe it wouldn't affect anything greatly, but I'm worried that 91 in TX may not be equal enough to 91 in CA. I thought I heard somewhere that CA has a different formula for their gas, maybe more ethanol?

Anyway to contact this guy and check with him about the gas question? UpRev said they didn't think it would be a problem.

interesting factoid... I just found out my boss used to be on a race team with Steve Kan. He has known him for 15 years and said that we do not realize the caliber of tuner he is. You guys need to realize you will not get a chance like this again for a while.

Such a small world, I've worked for this guy for 6 years and he knew and raced with Steve back when he had his RX7... it's just funny how things work out like that. I know I am making the right choice by taking my car to him. I was just hoping to spread the wealth by getting you guys involved.

I don't think Cali has a different blend. If anything, it's just that their highest octane gas is 91. If that's the case, just dilute 1:1 ratio of 89 and 93, but be sure to either almost completely empty your tank beforehand or do the mix for a couple of tanks. Or, I guess you could just find a station that has 91 and go through a couple of tanks.

Well ok, I have to trust those guys then. I wanted to do HFC's and tune this summer but don't know if I have the money for HFC's also. The whole not finding a job thing is screwing me over.

Also, how often has he tuned VQ's?

he actually owns a G35 coupe (04 6MT) as his daily driver (he races RX7s). It's sad because he tuned it with cobb AP and all he had was K&N drop in and top speed exhaust, and he was putting down just a bit less than my fully bolt on 5AT G with a uprev E-Tune

he really knows his stuff.

oh yeah, I'm going to be getting rid of my highflow cats soon (before this tune) I was only asking $300 for them they are AAM and I sprayed a high-temp thermal coating on them. they have about 10k miles on them but no signs that they are going bad.

I saw they were for sale in the thread on Driver, but thought they were spoken for. I'd definitely be interested.
