Have the opportunity to swap pumpkins with someone for a 3.3 final drive. Thoughts?

That's what I'm sticking with. Think I would run thru the gears too fast with a 3.5

Just got off the phone with PowerFab. Don't see any problem with having the Z ready for pick-up when I'm home on July 27th. Other than the body work and maybe the rear-pumpkin swap I'll be driving her at full potential while home on R&R!!!

Oh ok, I want to start piecing (slowly) a turbo build, but am I safe to assume that getting low compression pistons, say 8 or 8.5:1, could I get away with out having a sleeved block and not having to worry about the block blowing up on me? Granted I know with boost comes problems, but there are some things I can afford and others I can't, example: a long block.

There are a lot more deciding factors to consider to help one choose to sleeve or not. Lowering the compression helps with running more boost. However the amount is what determines to sleeve or not. Good rule of thumb is; 600+whp start considering sleeving the block.

Sounds like you are at the very beginning of going F/I and have a lot to learn/research. Luckily the VQ has been out for going on ten years and the R&D is done. Its now just what are your goals and finances.

If you just want to make your VQ more reliable with a F/I kit and your on a tight budget, IPP offers their "Stage I" short block; http://www.importpartspro.com/st1blon.html

I went with their "Stage III" long block because I want to get full potential of my GT28 turbos. If I had the JWT 850BB kit (GT30 turbos) I would've sleeved my block.

My build/goal wasn't to have the highest HP or fastest Z. I learned real quick there is always someone faster. My goal was to build a reliable, high-hp, street able, fun-to-drive Z. And I feel I did that.

If you're going to be at the dyno day on Aug 4th we can talk more and I can help ya out. BTW: What kit are you looking to go with?

Ok, wells my goals are around 450 to 500, and like you said Im not looking to be fastest car but I want something fun to push. I looked at ipp blocks as well and it might be something I would probably go with. And yes I still have a lot of research but Ive been going thread by thread trying to scrap what information I can. As far as kit, I'm not sure, but Im looking into a 6262 precision turbo, and maybe have a kit fabbed for me.

But my main concern is the block itself and exactly what internals (compression, bore, cams etc) I should be using

Budget is the biggest factor. I think for a reliable 450-500whp I would go with just that Stage I short block for the really budget minded build. If you have the extra cash jump up to the Stage II with CP pistons and Carillo rods. I wouldn't worry about cams & headwork for those power goals.

Don't forget you're going to need upgrade the following as well; EMS, fuel (pump & injectors), clutch/flywheel at a minimum. And for added insurance cooling is a big factor. I'd get the Pathfinder mod on the short block, larger radiator, low-temp thermostat and, oil cooler. Than I recommend a fuel pressure & boost gauge.

As far as the kit... Having one fabed usually ends up costing more than a pre-designed kit. There are a lot of good kits out there. Do you want to go single or twin turbo?

I think you need to; 1) Set a budget. 2) Set goals based on budget. 3) Talk to various shops and tuners. 4) Talk with more F/I owners to find out what the had great success with and what they wish they did differently.

We'll talk more when I get home. Let's not get off-topic from this thread.

Oh I definately know the cost involved when doing a proper turbo build. And if I don't have to build the head then that saves some of my wallet lol but yea I want to go with a single turbo. And the kit I was thinking of running other than a fabbed one was either momentum (which I think is defunct) or the bp kit.

And after i get my tires Im going to start collecting the supporting parts that I can use now I.e clutch/fly, radiator, oil and tranny oil cooler etc.

Ok definately we will talk more when I see you at dyno day, sometimes I get carried away when talking about a build

Sick car and can't wait to see and hear it on person

The one I'm getting has a Quaife in it. I'm going to assume that if you find an auto (3.3) base model it would not have any sort of LSD/VLSD. So look for any other model Auto, Z.

I was just asking if the one you were getting had and LSD cuz ur quaife from the 3.5 won't fit. Auto g35s with sport package have vlsd. I believe all 350s have a
3.5 final drive
