Default what does everyone consider an ecu reflash?

hi, im new here, i dont have a 350z but im planning on getting one. i currently have a mitsubishi eclipse.....i want to learn as much as i can about the 350's before i buy it........im not new to modding, but some terms that you use over here in this forum might be a little different.

first thing, why does everyone keep on talking about ecu reflash.....isnt this reflash kinda like sending your ecu to Jet Performance and having them retune it. cause thats not worthwhile ,if you have to add another performance part then you've just wasted your money coz then you'd have to do it again....am i on the right track here?

second thing is , why hasnt anyone bought a safc like apexi safc2 or something, isnt that better, coz then you can retune your car after every mod or whenever you want.

thanks

ya im not 100% sure on the reflash thing but i am about 99% that you would have to send it back out to be re...reflashed after ferther modding. and on the second thing im no expert but i asume your talking about some sort of tune it your self ecu system. people here do it but some blow there engines up quite efficiantly with there own "special" tunes. corect me if im rong but the fairlady z is quite a picky ***** if you tune her rong. she'll throw a fit...or a rod.. what ever floats your boat.

well you dont have to tune it yourself.....give it to a trusted performance shop, coz im about to do that on my 02 eclipse.....coz im running rich...........!

i dont even know how to hook up an AFC to my ecu....!

The SAFC's do not work extremely well with our cars, although it worked to richen up my mixture when I was running n20. The reflash was the only option besides a full stand alone, greddy e-manage, SAFC for a while. Now there is the UTEC system as well.

The reflash is basically sending your ECU off to TS or AAM with a list of parts you have on your car. They remap the fuel and timing maps accordingly.. as well as do other things like raise rev limiter. Generally this is done after you installed all your parts.

You can run the utec as well, which gives you the same functionality of the reflash, but in a package you can tune at just about any shop.

Regardless of which one you choose, adding additional parts will require a retune to get the most power out of it. From my experience, N/A parts don't change things enough to require a custom tune. For the $1K + tuning on the utec, you might gain 4-6 whp at peak.

people with Utecs have been gaining 15-20 rwhp and with some more serious mods like HC pistons and cams the Utec can really help.

My ecu flash i believe helped me more than any other mod because it was the most noticable in the way my car drove. Test pipes were the only other mod where you can notice a slight increase in power.

alright well im getting mine installed soon and when its all tuned ill compare to my old dyno in which i had the technosquare flash and see how much tuning can increase power.

I don’t know about pistons and cams, but stock engine NA gains could be closer to Zivman’s estimated numbers, at peak, and with tuning, because posted base MAF table would not get you there.

I am looking forward to see your results. Thanks

I have a SAFC-II, works great for simple A/F adjustments, but that's it.

The ecu reflash also does a few other things like Rev limit adjustment and timing maps. But with the UTEC out now, it's pointless to get an ECU reflash, and your second reflash will put you over the cost of the UTEC.

exactly, the Utec has so many more tuning options which renders the flashes obsolete. Granted the price for flashes will probably drop because of this but i still cant wait to see the difference tuning makes to a moderately modded Z.

OMG, i just read a write up on the forums about the UTEC by turboxs....its amazing, does it really come pre-programmed with 5 different maps that you can alter later on, if so thats just lovely, so when i buy my 350z i just just get that , install it and select one of the maps and BAM, rev limiter is gone and blah blah blah.....is that true?

btw, thanks guys for explaining some stuff to me....i actually understood it better....!great forum.
