Default NA UTEC tuning tips????

Well I got my UTEC in last week and after running the car on the base map from XS I could tell it was actually slower, even with the extra 500 rpms per gear. I made a few small adjustments to the fuel and timing myself, but I wanted to see if any of you NA guys out there had some fuel/timing settings suggestions for me. Im planning on getting the car dyno'd soon, possibly this weekend, but the guy doesnt have any experience tuning with the UTEC so Im looking for any suggestions before I get there. I cant afford to take my car to a different state to pay for tuning right now and Oklahoma isnt exactly full of Nissan tuners. Thx guys!!! Connor

Do you have the TunerREG option? It makes tuning much easier and more accurate/reliable, especially if the tuner has not used the UTEC before.

This option is also mandatory if you upgrade to forced induction (I cringe when I hear people are being sold and tuning FI applications without -- scarry!).

Hope this helps,

get the tuner wideband. then do some datalogging and make some corrections to even out the AF ratio...

i would tune it to 13.1 12.6 12.3 and get it dynoed and go from there

you cant tune it without a wideband...

go 13.0-13.5 A/F till about 6200 rpms, then dip to 12.7-12.8 And run as much timing advance as it allows you to without knocking. The tuner pro will log knock and A/F.

The TunerREG is a wideband 02 sensor controller that plugs right into the UTEC. It allows you to datalog your air/fuel ration when tuning.

Hope this helps,

+1, Have you tried an A/F around 12.6-12.8 with more timing advance as a comparison to a leaner A/F?? Wasn't sure if the car responds to more timing as compared to A/F.

+1 on the tuner WB. The one in the pictures is way bigger than mine. I highly reccomend you get it if you plan on ever fine tuning, getting into the UTEC yourself. I learned a TON today on fine tuning temperature compensation from Mike over the phone, Id go datalog down the street, pull over and call Mike. He knows his stuff, got my car running damn near perfect after 3 or 4 logs of me reading him info and him telling me what to look for/change. Thanks Mike, and +100 on getting this WB....

I haven't had much time to tune since I installed my Utec and Tuner Lite, but I've actually been picking up a knock (01) at around 4700 rpm with the base map. My A/F jumps a little from 4500 to 5000, but its still only 13.2-13.3, and the timing on the base map isn't very aggresive either. I don't know how accurate the stock knock sensor is, but I thinking I might just turn down the sensitivity on the Utec.

Anyone else had this issue?

Note: I'll attach a log of A/F for the base map.

Try turning the knock sensitivity down. And BTW a knock of 1 NA is nothing. Do you actually feel it driving?

It has been said that the the TunerREG option is mandatory for UTEC novices...now, is it mandatory for tuning of NA rev-up engines (non 2006) or are we looking at an extra feature for data logging here? I mean, it would be $999+379 right? Do others out there have the UTEC ONLY (for NA apps of course)?

well its not mandatory if you have a dyno at your house. its the only wideband that you can plug into the utec, so it datalogs the AFR across the board with all of your other stats.

i guess you can do some runs with another wideband and try to remember what your AFR was at rpm, but i am thinking thats crazy.

Check the factory timing values in your log, if the factory timing vales continue to increase this means the factory ECU did not consider the noise knock, and you can strat decreasing the sensitivity of the UTEC knock parameter.

If the factory timing goes... 20..20.5..21..21..21.3..21.6..19..21.6..22..etc.

Because it went to "19" the factory ECU probably heard some noise it considered knowck and retarding the timing at that point.

Hope this helps,
