Default Tuning Idea (for broke people)

Just came up with this... maybe its a horrible idea, but help me decide.

I'm considering getting an AEM wideband gauge... to datalog I would run through the RPMs several times (under load of course) and as a datalogger I would use a camcorder to record the AFR and RPMs, then use something like an eManage to tweak it until it was good. I figure this can be done for under $400 + I would get permanent hardware instead of just a software reflash. Thoughts?

if you get the zeitronix wideband it will data log RPM, AFR, boost , EGT,throtle position and one user input for up to nine hours and its only $400. but the boost sensor and EGT sensor are extra. i have it and its a really nice unit.

Watching a video and trying to tune from it will be hit and miss . Say ..you start to go leaner at 4500rpm's via the A/F gauge . But the area in the fuel map that needs to be changed was actually the 4250rpm cell in the map . So you make a change in the 4500rpm cell . Now you do another run and it shows you going leaner in the 5000rpm area....see what Im getting at ? You'll be chasing the tune the whole time

ok just went out to try his idea..... its crazy, if you have a really good camera with a good wideband and a really good slow motion playback then it works great

i did five runs, you can actually hit the slow motion and dial in exactly whatever rpm you want. the 5 runs were all pretty much the same, a couple of instances were barely off but overall it worked well

and it makes for some crazy videos

update.... so i have been doing this all night, its the most fun, it works better when its nighttime cause all the lights and gauges light up really well so when you play them back you can read it all...

car is running better than ever... will perfect it with the tuner wb so i can datalog and not do the ghetto version. hehehe

I found on my car that timing was way and I mean way more crucial than A/F to make adjustments to. Even though my car was running rich, the combination of running rich with timing that wasn't advanced enough was a big double whammy. Adjusting the A/F helped but didn't compare to making the adjustments to get timing back to where it needed to be. That being said, an A/F only adjustment tool (ex. Apexi) may not get you where you want to be if your timing is off.

so should I get my dealer to advance timing +2 degrees before messing with the A/R? Heres my mod list:

JWT Popcharger, Crawford v5 plenum, Alphawerks Headers, Kinetix Cats, JIC Y-Pipe and Fujitsubo Exhaust.

Think I need more timing?

a camcorder as a means of datalogging? I would not even bother - you will never get the true picture of anything going on

if you are concerned with your AFR I would not do anything with your timing - you need some form of engine mgmt, either a flash or a utec or emanage. Skip the Apexi - its a waste on this car

i am picking up my tuner wb on friday but i did the camera thing for fun...

on my big screen tv when i played it back, i could tell you the difference in the AFR every 50rpms if i needed. you can play it back in super slow motion. not saying this is the best idea. but it was fun to do.

i did my runs in fourth gear too so the rpms and AFR were nice and smooth

I was once told that AEM WB is not that accurate and that something like a innovative wideband is much more reliable. At least from a street tuning aspect. Of course someone is going to say "who told you that crap?" The answer would be Sharif.

the AEM is frankly every bit as accurate - it just does not read down quite as low as the Innovate one does - it is also alot less expensive, since it does not datalog. For those looking for a quick, at a glance look of what is going on without having to sift through datalogs, the AEM cannot be beat IMHO. For those that want/need more in depth info, or who want to log to their engine mgmt system, the TXS Tuner, Innovate, or PLX units all are excellent
