Default vortech tuning question

I just installed a vortech supercharger with 3.12 pulleys, test pipes, rps clutch and flywheel.
Is it safe to track my car or even drive it on the streets without a tune?
Some tell me yes some say no..

You need to take it and have it tuned by a pro. on a dyno. The stock out of the box tune on the vortech is for the 3.33 pulley. Therefore, your timing and fuel will be off.

You can drive the car just don't go WOT and try to keep it under 4k rpm.

No.... Especially if you are new to FI... What kind of guages do you have installed to keep an eye on your AFR?? If you go to lean you go boom, you dont want to spend the money on the Vortech and then blow your engine...

A good tune should not cost you more than 150 - 300... My 1st tune cost me just a bit above 300 to get it all set up. Then after that they were about 140 or so...

It is always much better to be safe than sorry.

You can drive it on the streets, just do not boost it... A tune is not that expensive and if you can afford FI you can afford a tune... If you did not budget for a tune when you budgeted your FI you did not budget properly...

even if you didn't have the ss box, you'd be fine as long as you stay out of boost. Just cruise around, use part throttle. you'll be fine.

I have been driving my TN ST G35 for a week without a tune...stock fuel pump and stock injectors. I have been using my UTEC to log A:F ratios and timing to see how the stock ECU manages everyhting now. I have even boosted up to 2 psi at about 3500 rpm (with light throttle..maybe 20%) just to see what the stock ecu does. the datalogs show that the stock ecu is richening up the mixture to just under 12:1 and no knock. interesting!

If you are a meathead and can't control yourself, don't drive! if you play it very safe, you'll be fine. just go getit tuned as soon as you can.

I have the money for a tune but i want to track my car this sun. I guess i wont be doing that any more. I have defi egt and boost gauge, thought i should get an o2 wideband too but didnt have the flow at the moment.
I heard the ss box on the vortech can be tuned with the proper software, but should i invest in something like a utec or an emanage? Whats the diff in tunning the ss box to tunning something like the utec? What do you guys think i will benifit from the most? Thx alot peepz, learning alot here!

How often do you need to tune the Vortech Supercharger?

The SS box w/ the R4 software works well. I am using it and I have had no problems with it at all so far. You can only tune AF to every 500 rpms tho where in a UTEC or Eman Ult you can tune to every 100 or so.

I will get another management system in the future when I go to the 2.87 and a bigger blower but for now I am happy with the tune and I am boosting up 9.5 with no problems.

i looked at the SS box and R4 software pretty hard when I was thinking of getting a vortech. It looks pretty good, but it only has adjustments every 500 rpms. For the vortech, it should be fine since you don't have you tune for spool up. The vortech is like tuning an N/A car....just with a rucher mixture and less timing.

The biggest advantage that the UTEC has is the ability to dynamically tune the car..not just use offsets off of the factory MAF output. Additionally, the Utec Tuner lets you datalog WB O2. that is unbelievably convenient, especially when tuning for part throttle driving!!!

the SS box has the ability to datalog WB O2, but not on the SS box that comes with the vortech. I spoke with Split Second, and they won't upgrade the vortech box!

You can tune the SS box with boost and or rpm's . Ive done mine by Boost [ timing and fuel ] . There is more room and better control than doing it with rpm's , because you can make changes ever .5 psi . Doing it with rpm's is every 500rpm's

From what i've heard, when you tune your ss box, sometimes your injectors dont put out enough gas so bigger injecters are needed. Is this true? With a utec, must i also get injectors, pump, and fuel rail??? I went with a supercharger because of the reliability and lower cost then a turbo set up but i'm having second thoughts now.

You should be able to tune it for the smaller pulley [3/12 ] and have no problems at all . If you start to run out of fuel up top , you may have to change out the fuel system . I wouldnt worry about it though...should be fine

I am running the 3.12 pulley and up top I am actually at around 10.5 or so... I tad rich but it seems safe to me.

Here is my boost / AFR chart... I will talk to my tuner about tuning with boost instead of rpm's to try to even out the mountain peaks I have there.

That spike at the end is where he let off the gas... I get that after WOT and letting off the throttle... Is that normal? I sure hope so...lol...

The tuner kept the AFRs in between the 12 and 11 range, that should be fine for ypur application. One slight dip into the 10.5 range. I would try to pick the 10.5 up if I was tuning it, but that is just me. For the most part the engine is very safe where it is at.
