Default Vortech SS Box

Hello all.

I'm mostly on the G35 forum but I know there are more FI guys here. Question for those with Vortech and the SS Box. I can't seem to connect to the box. Anyone else had trouble connecting? How did you fix it? How can you tell if it's getting power? How important is the type of serial cable? I'm using a gender changer because I have a femle/female cable and I'm using a gender changer to change one end to male to connect to the box.

Thanks for any input.

You need to get a [9 pin to USB adaptor ] to hook up to your laptop . Dont get the one from Radio Shack...they dont work . Also ...did you try all the com ports first ?

Yes, I tried all the ports. My laptop has a serial port so I don't think the cable is the issue. I think the box is not getting power. I checked the wiring to the ECU three times, I think they're correct, using the autosport wiring harness by the way. Where else can I tap into a 12V source to see if box is getting power?

New install, trying to tune and get maps...etc. Running very lean at mid to top. Getting the fuel pump/FMU checked out Tue/Wed by installer but with no gauges installed right now I was trying to get boost info from SS box.

If my belt is slipping towards the upper mid to the high rpm end will my belt squeal? Or can the belt be slipping without the belt squeal? I can definately hear the SC whine at low to mid rpms but there dosen't seem to be any sc whine at the upper rpms. Maybe with no boost pressure the FMU is shutting down?

The SS box should have a map already loaded in it . Couple of possibilities , 1- FMU not wired right , alot of people have got the wires mixed up to it . 2-The inline fuse for the FMU is bad or not there . 3- the settings for the FMU to come on , arent set right in the SS box .

As long as you have the belt pretty tight and isnt squeeling when cold . You should be ok there . If its slipping up top...it will hold boost at the point it starts to slip . Mine slips at 13 to 14psi and it will hold it in that range .

was this a used kit ?

Running lean up top is a common issue with an untuned SS box. I'd just take your car to the dyno.

Out of the box new it runs lean at top? I thought everyone says Vortech runs very rich out of the box. Been on the dyno, that's how I found out about being lean.

The only ones I have heard of running lean up top , is the people or shops trying to flash the ECU for the full tune .

What other breathing mods does the car have ?

If your still running cats , your not going to be running lean . There has to be something not working right

I think it was my plenum spacer. I took it off this weekend and noticed a big difference in the higher rpms. I'm assuming Vortech was designed for the stock setup and the plenum spacer was delivering too much air in those higher rpms. I'm hitting the rev limiter now when I wasn't before. I can't be sure until I get it on the dyno. Also I spoke with a split second guy and we determined it was my serial cable that was not connecting to the box. I had to get a serial extension cable because most normal serial cables switch pin numbers 2 and 3 at one end. I'll confirm this today, I bought an extension cable and the box specifically showed that the pins are straight thru.

If it was the plenum spacer then I'll put it back on and tune for more fuel at those rpms and see if I can squeeze a little more out of her. Just a thought tho, can the ss box control more fuel? It just came to me that the box either turns on or off the fuel pump, right? If that's the case then would I have to recalibrate the FMU with a kit for more fuel delivery?
