Yea, stop f___ing with your tips. It's rich. I've seen it come and go depending, not only on the overall A/F, but also on your driving style. If you run in an RPM band where it's rich, they will get black.

I disagree... I had the worst black tips, and my AFR was slightly lean (before tuning)

Like I said, this probably happens the most on cold start, where the engine automatically runs rich, and since the exhaust pipe starts out cold, the hot soot particles stick to the cold exhaust tail pipe.

Coincidentally this kind of hot-particle sticking to cold-surfaces comes up in my research a lot at UCLA...

Ha ha! Alright prefessor. I salute your hot particle on a cold tip work. That's the kind of research we need more of in our institutes of higher learning, ...and I just thought it was running rich.

soot is made up of very tiny particles... hot particles may bounce off of a hot surface, but have more a higher chance to stick to a cold surface

Hey man, you still on this forum? Kidding.
This guy makes a reasonable argument for why the tips get caked. I don't recall my tips getting so full of soot when I was stock but now, after having cleaned tips inside and out and then a few hundred miles later, they're full of soot again. I've done a little reading on the subject, wondering if I am running rich and wasting fuel but more importantly, leaving some ponies on the table and this answer and the previous one by the same guy above is the best I've found yet. Is there more to the story?
Naturally aspirated with full bolt-on's and tuned by a FI oriented tuner. The pic below is after approx 300 miles. They were spotless. The soot comes off easily, that's not my concern. Am I loosing power as a result?

Yeah, figured that. Still curious if anyone's got anything above and beyond what the most logical explanation I've found yet, being what I referenced above. Seems like FI cars tend to be the dirtiest while a Hemi Charger that I walked past in a parking lot had unusually clean tips, inside and out. The car itself wasn't exactly spotless, so I assume this engine burns really efficiently. Lean and mean. I'm not concerned about the cleanliness as I am the reason for the build up and if I'm loosing power from running rich.

Run E85, no soot whatsoever. I think its the chemical makup of gasoline that leave soo much carbon after its burned.

Maybe water injection will keep'em clean. I look at this soot as a possible symptom of a potential problem, the problem being that the VQ's apparently run a little too rich from the factory per some of what I've read and my tuner is not used to naturally aspirated tuning.
