When to tune with the small mods?
Hi all,
I have a couple questions for the Z pundits out there. Two q`s:
1. I`ve steadily modded my Z away from stock. Nothing unusual or gravity-altering, but things are starting to accumulate. I have the following breathing mods on the car now:
A. Jwt popcharger
B. 5/16`` Motordyne spacer
C. JIC 3.1`` single y-pipe back.
These changes, along with some dedicated weight-removal and a UR 15 flywheel have changed the character of the car - sharper, more high-rpm, pull, etc.
Q: Do you think these 3 mods would warrant looking into some sort of tune? If so, what is an economical means of doing this? I think I`m out of the UTEC budget btw.
Q: Unrelated to the previous q: Mine has always done this. Do your Z`s drive very sluggishly while the motor is cold? I baby the car for several mins., before starting to give it serious throttle (ie. more than 3.5k rpms and/or 2/3 throttle), but the lack of throttle response and general low power within the first 5 mins of start up always draw my attention. Do these cars pull lots of timing / run rich while cold as a protective measure? If I had to, I doubt I could beat a civic while running cold.
Thanks!

my car always feels 'off' when it's cold...but as soon as it warms up, the engine feels great. Not sure why that is - maybe the ECU has some kind of setting for cold engine temps.
I know of Technosquare - mail the ECU, ~$500, etc.
Anyone have opinions of shops to visit in the Midwest (near Chicago or north of there)?
Thanks again!

I am going to Sound performance soon to have my utec tuner installed along with a few more mods
ok, a tune or tunable piggy back would be my first item on a car if i was modding it, for instance, had a bone stock G35 come in, it put down 239 on my dynojet, i put a KnN in there and a UTEC to control his 100 shot.
i was able to get 255 out of the car with almost 17 hp in a few spots, only mod was a UTEC.
i would add a piggyback computer to the list of the first mods to do, then i would get a deal with the dyno operator/tuner so when you change any mods, he will retune it for a special price.
