Default basic bolt ons + forced induction

Alright, lets say i wanted to build up my Z, right. well i know that a lot of stuff you may purchase for the Z will end up coming off if you decide to go forced induction. So my question is..... what mods can i do for the time being to satisfy my power needs while staying n/a, but at the same time will benefit in the long run when i go forced induction. for example, i know i can upgrade to a lightweight flywheel, and high end clutch, because it will benefit n/a and it is needed for FI, and i won't have to remove it. are there any other parts that work like that? thanks guys.

p.s. its kind of hard to search for something like on the forums, its too complex of a question, let alone a word or phrase to search for.

The only thing I've ever heard of was cams, but that may not be true. People here with FI run alot of combinations of things. Now whether or not it is beneficial to numbers is a different story.

Your best bet is to speak with Alberto. This guy has blow his motor, killed a tranny, and god knows what else. Through all of this he has figured out what works and what doesnt. In my opinion he and the people at Forged Performance are the leading authority on forced induction.

Alberto's a sharp guy, but with all due respect - research is your best friend. Read everything, talk to shops, and make your own decisions. I've been NA, FI, back to NA, going back to FI, and through everything, I've learned that the best advice came through my own homework... Just food for thought.

With regards to what the OP is asking:

1. Clutch / Flywheel (make sure you spec to your end-state power goals - getting a "drivable" clutch now, but having to pull it and sell it for another beefier setup later is a waste of time and money).

2. Exhaust (make sure it's compatable with whatever FI setup you're going with - i.e. most TD exhausts don't work with single turbo kits and don't bother putting a weak 2" exhaust on if you're going to push big twins).

3. Plenum mods (spacers/upper are fine, but don't do much all things considered).

4. Suspension and Brakes. In either case (NA or FI) these are never bad mods.

5. Rims and tires (the wider rears you get the better - traction is critical when pushing high HP #'s).

I'm sure that there's a few more things, but that's really the best of what you can do without having to go back to them later. Most intakes / ECU flashes / etc. are a waste of time if you're going FI in the near future. You'll end up ditching the intake and re-flashing the ECU if not getting a more complete EMU solution all together.

Good luck.

Talking ECU Reflash

I have an 03 Z with the ME 5/16 spacer, JWT Popcharger, DC Headers, APS dual exhaust, J&S Safeguard, and a Zex 100 shot. The J&S autmoativcally pulls 4' degrees timing when I turn on the Zex kit.

My question is whether getting a flash for my car will make the car run very lean? I'm worried about detonation when used with the Zex kit. The Zex has the Window switch.....should I dyno it with the Zex kit on or off prior to the reflash?

Any help is appreciated guys!

I agree w/ S1AMEZE.

However, I'd like to add that headers in most cases won't work for you:

> You may receive new manifolds with your FI kit.

> Some headers may fit a ST kit, but only certain ones, & usually don't produce gains.

> I don't think any headers can be coupled with any TT kits.

> Headers typically hinder performance with SC kits.

Headers will not hinder performance with a SC . It may move the whp gains to the top of the rpm range and lesson the trq a little down low .
