Default tune with Camshafts

many people suggest doing a tune with camshaft upgrade.

why do they need a tune - does the mixture gets too lean or rich? or does the timing becomes too aggressive or too passive?

Mine went lean down low and as rich as 11.0 up top from 6000-7200 rpms so yes you really have to get a tune.

yes.. i did some search and found that its got something to do with ignition signal. The car is driving fine though, dunno if I should send it back or not, hopefully its something that can be fixed easily because it will cost a bit of time and money to send the unit back and get a new one.. from new zealand

Nope not an accessport. I sometimes wonder if that thing will even show up.

alright, fit the tomei 268 cams in, and now the car seems to run SLOWER. I wonder if tuning will get me all the power back. I compared UTEC log, the ignition timing stayed exactly the same, but the A/F became bit richer up top.

will more aggressive cams let me run more timing?

With my jwt cams i lost some low end tq but it really comes on about 4500+ rpms. I run about 12.8 af/ ratio with around 25-28 degrees of timing.

Re-camming has a lot of variables..Different lift, duration, overlap and degreeing....All things that a good dyno run and tune will zero in on.

i compared my maf voltage with cams and turboxs base map, it is only giving me more maf voltage from 6000rpm onwards, compared to stock cam+stock map.

but then stock turboxs map is very loose in timing.

will more aggressive timing cause more air sucked and higher maf voltage?

Well with more lift and duration the intake valves are open longer so yes it does suck in more air. My maf is pretty much pegged from 6000-7000.

yes, higher lift should cause more intake and exhaust.. but i wonder if ignition timing will have any effect on intake voltage.

earlier ignition = better burn = more force to push the pistons down = more air fed thru intake?

yeah I am doing the tune.. but I am not seeing more airflow than stock cam with same timing, except above 6000rpm.

my main concern is that if the cams are actually allowing more air fed to the engine from 4500rpm or so as many said, or is actually only going to benefit from 6000rpm in my case. according to the current log I have, it looks like its only gonna benefit from 6000rpm onwards. more air, more fuel, more burn, more power.

now that is why I want to know if its gonna feed more air with more aggressive timing, which will make more use out of higher lift cams.

or it could be the weather because the log I took before cams was done on a cold dry night. its bit warmer (by about 8deg celcius) and much more humidity.

are the cams worth it, I cannot tell you until everything is done, but I am pretty sure it will give me good power from 6000rpm onwards as my afm was sensing more air from that point.
