Default Was told to create a new thread. Why ECU reflash versus...

...a unit from COBB or one of the other brands.
ECU flashes seem to cost around 600 dollars and up. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a unit from COBB do the same and more? Plus, a lot easier to install. I started looking at this when I wanted to get rid of the factory speed limit. Looks like the COBB unit can do that. Looks like it can save different settings and change them on the fly, plus give you feedback.
So why would someone spend money on what seems to me to be less?
Hmmmm...600 dollars to do something once that will give me a change that I can't remove myself.....or 600 dollars to plug in a box to a harness that lets me do the same thing, but change things back if I want better gas mileage, etc.
To me, there doesn't seem to be much of a decision here, so can someone explain why there are people who pay for the flash?

mainly because cobb just released the access port recently and the flash has been around for quite a while. If I where you I would get the access port and eventually the street tuner software so you can get that thing on a dyno and tune properly.

Then why are so many guys still wanting to get a flash? Cobb unit is out for pre 07 models and the files for the -7-08 will be out soon.

one reason for people getting the reflash is because they have no shops near them that can tune the car so they send the ecu out to get flashed

Just a marketing my way through, don't mind me.

Osiris is $700 + shipping.
Allows you to change maps on the fly. (up to 5 stored maps on your ECU, unlimited in software)
Allows you to Data Log, and clear/check codes.
Allows you to get eTune support if you have specific mods (currently free may change soon)
Allows you to change your tune as you add new mods.
Allows you to get custom tunes flashed if you want to go to a Pro Tuner.
Allows you to tune a second car if you buy a secondary discounted license (maximum supported is 2 vehicle licenses).

Now that said, you can go to an Uprev Pro Tuner and just get a custom flash for your vehicle. That is going to be far more accurate than any off the shelf flash or reprogram from other companies. Or you can buy a mail in ECU reflash and thats not going to be very specific to your car and your mods. Or you can buy a hand held reflasher that will give you a number of generic maps to flash your ECU with when you please that will be generic and not specific to your car and your mods.

I kind of like the idea that for $700 you get the tools to modify your car and allows you to receive excellent tuning support not only from the manufacturer but also local tuning shops, comes with testing/logging/diagnostic tools, allows you to tune your second car at a reduced rate. Thats just me though.

/end marketing

Good info above BTW. Umm I didnt thnk Cobb released the software 4 the rev limit and top speed? Also when u mean a pro tuner is that like a JT @ PF or who? So pretty much this thing is worthless if u dont go and get a professional tune? Maybe thats why people are still getting a flash.......

We have a number of Uprev Pro Tuners available around the world. We're working on updating our website so that you don't have to contact us for your nearest Pro Tuner.

Osiris is a flash, but it's a flash that you can do yourself, no need to send in the ECU. Yes that does mean off the shelf maps. Difference is that we send out a tool called Cipher, it is a datalog/diagnostic tool that allows you to e-mail us info from your car and we'll turn around an eTune that is more specific to your car for free. Also it allows you to run 5 maps, and switch on the fly. You don't have to stop the car, plug something in, hit buttons, restart the car, then have access to the new map. You can drive up to a nice seafood restaurant, press a button, switch to a Valet map and the guy who takes your car can't go above 25mph. When you get back in the car after dinner you just switch it back. Pull up to a light and some Mustang guy revs at you, switch it to a performance map and leave him in the dust. All on the fly.

So you get off the shelf maps, free eTunes, instant map switching, datalogging and diagnostic tools, plus a bunch of other features. Not a bad deal. Plus if you want to drop a bit more coin, you can take it to an Uprev Pro Tuner and get a custom specific tune for your car.

Working on them as we speak. Trying to get the End User stuff out first. That is our main priority, once that is available and tested you'll see the new car stuff coming out. I think our dev guy ran out of a certain part yesterday for testing the newer style ECU's, so yes we're actually working on it.

Once you buy Osiris, you can do a basic flash, and then using Cipher, you can log the data and e-mail us back that log file. From that log file we can tweak your particular targets and send you back a new file to flash on your ecu.

Purchase Osiris here

UpRev, you sure have a lot of words for a product that's not fully available yet with testing and numbers.
What is available currently? Like right now? Can I eliminate the top speed limiter? Is there a function that when you are in WOT, the throttle opens fully, under all conditions? Can you raise the rev limiter? You do mail-in flashes? Thanks for any info.

I'm also interested in the COBB. anyone have more info on that?

Got to agree with you Fluid1. The Cobb will be out first from what I hear, and for the price you can update and monitor. What year is your Z?
