Exclamation ECU Reflash???

I need some input for the engine mods I got. I currently have an Injen CAI, Samco Coolant Hoses, and Invidia N1 Dual Exhaust. The mods I plan on ordering within the next week or so are Test Pipes, Y-Pipe, and the Kinetix SSV. Would it be worth reflashing my ECU with those mods??? Those are the basic full intake/exhaust mods (except headers because i heard they dont help much at all). What kind of reflash is the most recommended and where can i get one??? What would i need to do a SIY reflash???

There are three major ECU reflash outfits for the Z, unless you are Forced Induction which will require more than just a reflash to tune your Z.

Uprev sells software you upload yourself with an everyday laptop and their software:
http://uprev.com/products/osiris_NI.html

Technosquare requires that you remove and ship your ECU to them in Cali:
http://www.technosquareinc.com/nissanflash.htm

Cobb has an all in one unit that plugs into your OBDII port under the dash:
http://www.cobbtuning.com/products/?id=3686

They all do pretty much the same thing except Uprev will fine tune your fuel map based on your cars specific needs while driving with their Cypher logging software.

The uprev sounds like a good product if your inclined enough to know what your doing. Also unlike a flash you can re-tune everytime you get a new mod rather than having to send out the ECU to Technosquare.

The Accessport looks similar, but it doesn't use your laptop is what it looks like to me. So if you don't have a laptop then that might be a good way to go. I know Cobb makes some great stuff. Just curious to actually see how both work and how user friendly they are before I drop my $700

Both are fairly simple to use. You're right we didn't go with a hand held, you will need a windows laptop to do the reflash, or a really long USB cable for your desktop (j/k don't try it). The hand held route didn't give us as nice of an interface for the Cipher product, and left us with no expansion for future updates. We will in the near future give you the option to tune it yourself, which is where the windows laptop gets really handy. Also with the hand held options we've found ourselves limited on what upgrades we can offer customers in the future to product they already own.

How "inclined" do you actually have to be? About all I would have going for me is the laptop. I am most likely going to need something done but I know nothing about tuning a car.

also interested in the answer to this. will there be a noob mode where you can only make simple, safe changes and an advanced mode where you can blow up your engine?

Easy mode will be the standard Osiris with flashable maps, and eTune capabilities so that you don't need to know how to tune cars. The as yet un-named Osiris with the tuning features will be for the customers that know a bit about what they are doing and want to play with the settings a bit more. There will not be a simplified version of it and it will allow you to do most anything you want, including killing your motor.

Noob mode is what you have right now.

The main reason we're even coming out with the advanced tuning option is because thats how we got started. Jared wasn't satisfied with other tuning options when it came to his Subaru so he decided he wanted a tool that he could use that would allow him to keep the stock ECU and give him full tuning features. From that was born Cipher and Osiris. As it turns out the open source stuff for the Subaru is fairly capable so they turned the power and features of Cipher and Osiris towards the Nissan market because there weren't many good options out there. The whole plan was to have these end user tuning features out much sooner, but the standard Osiris was so popular that we focused on supporting more vehicles rather than updating features. At this point Jared and John have been so inundated with request from end users that want more adjustments that we're going to need to satisfy those customers.

Most people won't want or need the as yet un-named Osiris, but we're going to have that as an upgrade option for those customers that do. It will be far too much to handle for the average Joe and is not recommended for someone that is not clear on how the adjustments affect the way their cars run, or what kind of damage they can do.

cool...thanks for the reply. i was just wondering if we would have the ability to make minor adjustments to the maps we already have (i.e. change the rev limits). i guess we can just email you guys for e-tunes/minor changes.

a little off topic but out of curiosity, since you guys originally wanted it for subarus but went towards nissan, do you have plans on expanding to other manufacturers?

Thats top secret.

Yes you would have the ability to tweak little settings, but you can get alot out of control real fast with it. Tuning is a very subtle thing, and we figure it would be like nitrous. You start with a 50 shot, then jet it for 75, then 125, then you think... oh well a little more won't hurt it so you run 200 and KABOOM and you're buying $3k+ worth of motor repairs.

If you feel you can trust yourself and you're willing to read up on how setting affect other settings, get yourself a good idea of how it all works and you're willing try it, you are more than welcome to tune it yourself. It'll just be another good tool to use to get the most from your car. Please be careful though.

I notice that you use the buttons on the steering wheel, what if you have a base? I guess I would have to get the COBB then right?

What if you had a after market steering wheel with buttons (my Mugello, uninstalled), could you use those buttons some how?

Nope, ours still works, just doesn't do map switching if you don't have cruise control from the factory on it. You still have a number of benefits over the COBB like the eTune capability. And our maps are still based on 3 years worth of testing and tweaking with a library of mods that is larger than all our competitors combined.

Don't care where the buttons are, if they aren't connected to the factory ECU for factory Cruise Control it will not switch maps, you will be limited to loading a single map rom file.

So, if you don't have factory cruise control you will only lose one feature, the map switching. It would be similar to the COBB piece where you would have to have the hand held and the cable to switch maps, except in it would need to be the laptop and the cable. You'd still have better mod support, and eTune among other features and benefits.

We can't do that to our Retailers and our Pro Tuners.

Right now the only discounts we are allowing is a small group buy for Frontier owners so that we can get some base tunes for their vehicles, and that is being done with our permission through one of our Pro Tuners. And no you can't trick them into letting a Z sneak in, your Z won't work with a Frontier tune.

Our closest Pro Tuner is http://www.quantumautosport.com/ They are in Germany but I know that Silo speaks English and he's our only European shop currently, I know we send a ton of business his way and he's always gotten good reviews.
